I had a lot of gas leaks on my 1985 Mercury 115hp engine so I installed rebuild kits on all three carbs. Most of the leaks went away and while the engine is running there doesn't appear to be any problem. When I shut the engine off gas drips out of the throat of the carb and even more gas runs down the butterfly shaft on all three carbs.I tried pulling the fuel line off and letting the engine run out of gas and the leaks still continue.I don't see any seals around the butterfly shafts in the parts catalog so any ideas as to why this happens. This problem happened before and after the rebuild kits.It looks like its getting close to sending the motor out to be worked on,probably could buy a new 115hp for what a few repairs will cost. Also a little water and oil mixture coming out around the prop shaft. Thanks if you ca be any help

I'm no outboard expert but I think your float levels are too high in all of the carbs.(Or they're sticking open) Is it running hot? If you can shake your butterfly shafts up and down, they're worn out. It won't leak out while its running because the vacuum from the engine sucks everything in. But even more importantly!Put a new set of seals in the lower unit ASAP!!!If you continue to run it as is you'll eventually need a new 115 hp Engine! Soon the oil will blow out and the water will come in your gearcase. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/jpshakehead.gif(Which has already started)Drain that crap out and get that engine over to the shop. Good luck

Question for 85 Predictor,I believe you have a 198x merc on your boat,do your carbs drip any gas either out the throat or at the butterfly shafts after you shut it off?I don't know anyone down here with an older merc motor and I am just curious as if anyone else sees this happening.

Mrwick, there is a place in Seattle Washington called Sea Way Marine. They specialize in parts and service for older and classic motors. I will see if I can track down their phone number for you...

If the guy at Rickracers can't track some carbs down for me I will try Sea-Way.I just find it hard to believe all three carbs would act exactly alike.I believe there is something common to this problem but I don't have a clue, don't know that much about carburetors. It appears that there is just to much fuel in there for them not to drip.

MrWick,
You might want to just give Sea Way a call for some advice, they are good that way. I was at their place a few times when I lived out there and was extrememly impressed with their knowledge of all types and era's of motors. Eeven an e-mail asking could not hurt... Good luck!

MrWick, I think it still could be worth a call to ask if they have any suggestions. I do not know the number, but Mercury also has a tech line you can call. I wish you luck!

I have a 1988 115 merc and it is totally normal for them to leak a little bit especally when you just shut them down and trim them up the gas they don't burn off remains in and leaks out, even when you prime the bulb before starting the carbs will spill off any overflow don't sweat it and run it!!

Mine carbs do this when shut off and trimed up. 2.4 200 no air silencer. My 2.0 135 did the same thing but was not as noticable because it had the silencer installed. AS long as your plugs look good and the engine runs good, I don't see a problem. Now it should not be excessive.

I agree if it is excessive then it's either the float set to high or you need new needle and seat valves either of which is no big deal.

I had the carb leaks before and after the carb rebuild. The needle valves and seats were put in with the rebuild even though the old ones looked ok.I removed one carb and rechecked everything but still leaks.I do not get any leaks when I prime the fuel so I am going to live with it unless it gets worse,no sense replacing carbs to fix it right now. Thanks to everyone who responded.

MrWick,

Just somthing to add to out conversation today about your gearcase... Just to be safe, you might want to change the gear lube. If there is a mily color, you need to change the seals, Provided it is merc lube in it, if it is green or looks like a dirty green, all is okay. That is simple enough and would only cost you about 10 to do it yourself. Remember, if it is milky, then you have water in there,if not re-fill and hit the lake! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif
