I have a '87 Starliner that I recently repowered with a '01 225 EFI 3.0L. I currently have the CMC powerlift with about 5 1/2" setback. I was wondering if there any of you out there that had experimented with setback on these models. I hope to spend some time experimenting with props in the very near future and will hopefully have some information to share about that. Till then.

If your steering cables are long enough, and your transom is strong enough, the 12-14" is supposed to be about right for that hull according to John Tiger Jr.

Sorry I can't answer your question but would like to add mine to yours. I have an '86 Starliner and would like to know what the engine height sweet spot is with 5 1/2" setback. My jackplate cannot be adjusted on the water, so the less experimentation the better. Thanks.

You do have a water pressure guage and the top 2 or 3 holes plugged in your lower unit dont you? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif

There is a formula for lift to set back, it is something like this; for every inch of set back you can raise the motor 1/4-1/2".

Water pressure guage is a must. What's the best thing to plug the holes with?

Tap the holes with a uss 5/16 tap, get some 5/16 set screws and some red loctite and screw them into the tapped holes.

I have an 86 Starflight with a Big Johnson V8(300hp). It has a CMC 6" manual jackplate on it and am running a 29pitch Mazco prop. Boat does mid to high 80s. You don't need too much setback as there is already about 6" built into the hull. Kunkels marine used the same setup on their Starflights in the late 80s very sucessfully.

Hoser, are you talking about the "Stepped Hull" when you say they already have 6" of set-back built in?
