Hey, my friend has a 1980 Eluder 18' with a 350 Mercruiser that's been rebuilt in '89, and it's been upgraded to an Alpha I three years ago. He's running a 17 pitch prop and says it'll do maybe a bit over 45. He says RPMs aren't even up to 4500 at that speed.

Shouldn't this combo go faster than that? Does anyone have any ideas why?

Thanks,
Greg

Either that engine isn't making any power, or the tach and speedo are suspect. Looks like it needs a good thorough checkout

Shot in the dark, but do you have the right gear ratio? In addition to what JW said, you might want to give Mike Combs at Checkmate a call. Sorry, don't have there numer with me, but it is on their web-site...

Is he trimming the unit up?If so,It does sound like the gear ratio is wrong for that engine. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gifWith a 1:50 ratio that engine should be screaming with a normal diameter 17 prop on it.I had an 83 Exciter with a 260hp V8 w/alpha drive.I believe its the same hull as an Eluder.I ran 60mph with a 22 prop @ 4900 rpm.Check the gear case and see if there is a ratio stamped on it.I believe the markings should be around the area where the case bolts to the bellhousing. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Good luck

Or... the gear ratio could be at the top of the drive on either side of the bearing cap. It will be one of the two places, I have seen them in both.

I talked to my buddy again. He said the gear ratio is the same as the stock outdrive, but hasn't been out to look at the stamp. He thought maybe the carb isn't opening all the way. I'm going to go check in the next day or two to see for sure. Thanks for all the hints and stuff. I'll reply back with what I find.

Thanks,
Greg
