View Full Version : New Member New Pulsare 2100 Br
Hi I am Brian from Bolton Ontario, cottage in Parry Sound area. Just bought a 1998 Pulsare 2100 BR 1999 225 Opitmax.
It turns out to be a boat that was friends of Rick E Z06 prior to the guy I bought it from.
I have some plans for this baby. Starting with props and a new 10 inch set back CMC Hydraulic plate (should be here by Friday). Along with a 25 pitch Trohpy
When I got the boat it was set up by the last owner to tow water toys motor down in the mud and spinning a 23 High five.
The motor is back 11.5 inches as Rick E's friend had set it up but it is a manual plate and I want to go Hydraulic and add a Bob's cone to it. When I get it set up I will post some good pictures of it and let you guys know how I am doing for GPS speed. It is supposed to have previously run 77 on GPS according to Z06.
Not a real computer guru and I cannot figure out how to post a picture.

WELCOME TO THE BEST GROUP OF BOATERS AND SITE AROUND. I AM CURRENTLY RUNNING A 1994 PULSARE LONG DECK WITH A MERC 225 XRI, 7.5" OF SETBACK, DAH 26 CHOPPER AT 71.2 MPH GPS.
Hi Jupiter
You say 7.5 inches back is that on a hydraulic jack? or fixed? I read your forum on the prop question. I am going to be trying several props on the 18th 19th 20th let you know what I find. I spoke to DAH they said a reworked Trophy was the ticket for this boat. I will be trying a 24 and 25 Trophy so if one works well I will send it down and see what they can improve. I will post my findings here.

I AM RUNNING A 5.5" HYD. JACK PLATE WITH BOB'S MACHINE SHOP 2" SPACERS INSTALLED BETWEEN THE JACK PLATE AND THE MOTOR. A LOT OF PEOPLE THINK THE TEMPEST IS ONE OF THE BEST PROPS FOR THE PULSARE.

Hey. Just to tell ya. Its Chris E. Here are a few pictures of this boat. And yes it was the boat my friend with the Venus owned. He bought it new from the factory. Bought the motor too and got 77 MPH, with a 23" tempest. Custom bow cover and decals on motor and boat. I can post a video later if you want me to as well.

I have many more if interested, but this is one of the better ones
Small world. I'm sure I've seen that boat in for servicing at Sharbot Lake Marina while I was there with my ZT230. I thought it was a brand-new boat - great shape for a '98. Joel -that's the ride I was talking about - you should like those colours!
My friend loved that boat. Took great care, I guess the 2nd owner did too. It was great
Chris your friend sure took care of the boat as did the guy I bought it from. He said it was clean when I called him but I did not expect it to be that good. It has another good home, it will be living in my heated warehouse for the winter and I am looking for a covered boat lift for it when it stays at the cottage.
Thanks for the video it looks great.
I am glad you like it. Hey JY or anyone from Lake and Trail, do you know if Chris purchased this boat from you guys? Is it possible to order directly from Checkmate?
If the records I have are correct it came form Pride of Muskoka when they were a Checkmate dealer.
Do you know if Chris ordered it brand new, or was ordered by Pride of Muskoka and then Chris bought it?

Nice boat TCAT, looks really sharp, pretty soon we'll have enough folks here in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) to arrange a get togeather somewhere. I'm in Markham but quite often will drive up to the Muskoka area for a run.
Take Care and Enjoy, you'll love tinkering with it !!!

JY - You are right on. Those colors match my Starlet exactly. In fact I redid the Checkmate logo on mine to match that style, rather than the block letters that were used back in '88. I like the graphics in the cockpit cover, nice touch. Convert that trailer from rollers to bunks, paint it black, throw on some bling wheels and I'll take the whole rig. Great video too!
I'll post a video of the boat rigged with the 225 ProMax on Sunday night. I have to go to my cottage. I'll talk to Chris
Ah yes, so that's where that Pulsare ended up! Congrats! That was a Pulsare that I strongly considered buying, but chickened out because it was out-of-country and I was worried about problems getting it to Michigan. One of the nicest Pulsares around.

Brian, are you thinking of selling your high five prop? If you are, and have a chance, my home phone is, 905-846-9169. A 23" pitch is just about what I need. I am just over in Brampton at Mayfield and Kennedy.
Hi Checkm8fan
Your just in time. Yes I will be selling the 23 High5 I am testing a 25 trophy this weekend and if that works great if not then I will be looking for a 25 High5 for skiing.
I have someone at my cottage interested too he is going to try it on his boat this weekend if he doesn't want it I will call you next week. Prop is a Flo Torq 2 it will need a Flo Torq kit for it as I need the one I have. Mint not even a nick in it, it is a little dull but other wise 9/10 on the Scream and Fly scale.
I also have a Laser II 25 pitch for sale.

Brian, I have a 25 laser II that I tried as well. I also have just tried a 26 small hub High 5 off a friends bass boat, it worked really well but I am not getting enough revs. It too is mint.
Never tried a 26p High5 small hub is it for sale or trade for my 23? Like to try it first? My 23 is a large hub by the way. How old is the small hub high 5? my friends and I have broken older small hub high 5 blades they were weak and had problems.
May we should talk on the phone whats a good time call.

Brian, this prop was used on two different Ranger bass boats with 200 horsepower motors.
I can find out if it is for sale . Call me tomorrow night if you want to, after 7:30pm.
Plain and Simple TCAT,
Your boat and current set up with a 27 Tempest will do 77.6 MPH. Not sure what your main application is though, but thats the best you'll get with that set up.
Hi Chris
It is running 78.7 now with a Boger modified 27 Trophy on a 10 inch Hydraulic CMC with Mercury scoops on the water picks. Ran this twice on GPS last weekend. The Boger mods on the trophy gained 2.1 mph over what it was as a stock Trophy. Also did a little blueprinting on the last 3 feet of the hull and sanded the last 20" of the pad with 400 emery. Going to try setting the engine back 2 or 4 more inches if I get time before the lake gets hard. Not sure if I will gain anymore though. I have a Tempest 27" too it runs 77.5 on my GPS bought it on ebay new in the box 255 US$ May send it to Boger and see if he can make it any better. Love to see 80 but I don't think the 225 Opti will do it.
I ultimatley want 2 props one for top end numbers and one for weekends skiing and tubing with the family. Like to have a good hole shot to pull up a skier on 1 ski and still touch 70mph. I am trying a Boger modified 25 trophy that I picked up in the States last week to see if it can do this.
I have 6 props for this boat now will be unloading them all but 2 when I am done.
23 high 5
25 Laser II
25 Trophy mod
26 Chopper
27 Tempest stock
27 Trophy Mod
Let you know if I get it any faster.
Hey Checkm8fan
I will call you Thursday night I have the 23 High5 here at the house. See if you can get a deal on the 26 from your friend and I will trade you. If they are the same condition.
Sounds good. Keep up the good work, it should do 80 if you keep tryin with props. You'll get it, just keep tryin!!!!!!!!! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

TCAT, HOW DOES YOUR BOAT HANDLE BETWEEN 65-70 MPH? DO YOU GET ANY CHINE WALK? I'M THINKING ABOUT GOING TO SOLID MOUNTS TO TIGHTEN THINGS UP IN THE ASS END SO I CAN SETTLE MY BOAT DOWN AT 70MPH.
Jupiter
What kind of steering do you have? Sorry I have read your posts many times but I do not remember if you said you had Sea Star or Sea star pro? Also jack plate and set back, hydraulic or manual. What prop are you running?
My boat has Sea Star pro steering on it and it is very good but takes some of the feel out of the boat that dual cable gives.
Yes the boat will chine walk but I am an old dude who has been driving fast outboards for over 20 years. Seat time is a big asset I just know how to steer it out can't explain how to do it I just do it. It took me a most of the summer in 1985 to learn how to drive my first boat a V-Mate II with a 200 Black Max on it. Now I don’t even realize I am doing it. It just happened one day!
As I raise the motor the tendency to chine walk lessens. The motor is at the top of my set up by the time I am at 60 mph (I will measure how high for you if you want). If the motor is down at 65 it wants to really walk. I have the water pick up scoops from Merc on the L/U these are great lots of water pressure. At the high 60’s and up you really have to balance the boat rather than steer it you are trying to keep it flat on the pad.
At speeds above 70 mph I even lean into the center of the boat to help balance it.
The Pulsare is dream to drive when it hits plane I am trimming and raising the motor simultaneously and it never gets bent out of shape right up to top speed.
The way your boat is rigged and loaded can make a difference too. Make sure there is no play in the steering even a little will cause problems. Solid mounts will help had those in a couple of my boats with Bridgeport 2.4 mercs on them. They will cause vibration through the boat at slower speeds. Battery or batteries should be in the back on the left side.
I have let one of my neighbors try and drive it and he lost it before he cleared 65mph so it is just experience that is the solution.
Sorry I have no magic answer let me know if I can try and help with anything else.

TCAT, I HAVE SEA STAR PRO HYD. STEERING, HYD. JACK PLATE WITH 7.5" OF SETBACK, DAH WORKED MERC CHOPPER 26, BATTERY MOUNTED TO STARBOARD, OIL TANK MOUNTED TO PORT, TH MARINE FOOT THROTTLE, TEMP GAGE AND WATER PRESSURE GAGE. UP TO 65MPH STABLE, I USUALLY BACK OFF ONCE I HIT 70-71MPH CAUSE IT'S F&$#@*G SCARRY WHEN IT GETS OUT OF SHAPE!! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/Eyecrazy.gif (HALF THE FUN OF DRIVING THOUGH!! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/bounce.gif

Jupiter.. Move all the weight you can to the port side.. Trim Pump, battery, storage, ect.. A loaded cooler in the back on the port side works too... I found that if you realy want to be sucessfull at controlling chine walk the boat needs to be as balanced as possible... By myself with no weight I can't control my boat once it reaches that MAGIC SPEED..
A good looking honey in the port seat (125# or less) works real good....
*** You can always compensate for the port passenger's weight ***
>>> BEWARE THE MORE WEIGHT ON THE PORT SIDE COULD COULD INFLUENCE YOUR OVERALL PERFORMANCE <<<
I loved the solid motor mounts on my Promax. Not only did they lock the motor down and completely eliminate chine walking at any speed, but the solid mounts also allowed me to cut power at any speed without having to counter-steer to make up for the suddenly unloaded motor. Rubber mounts just plain suck for anything that runs 60+.
Side benefit of solid mounts, the passengers can feel the hull vibrate with every pulse from the cylinders, it makes the whole boat feel like a real muscle boat..........
Hey JW
Did you add the soild mounts or were they always on the motor? If you added them did they stop the chine walk? Or is it that you are able to drive it and not notice it due to experience. How severe is the vibration? The engines I had soild mounts on were 2.4 bridgeports and they shook like hell maybe wouldn't be so bad on my 225 Opti? Any toughts? Wouldn't mind tightening up the steering a little more.
Jupiter I noticed when my stock 26 chopper is on the boat it is not as stable as it is with the Tempest or Trophy. Ever tried a different prop of the same pitch? But man you gotta love sound of an over the hub prop running flat out trimmed out nothing like it.
All of the Promax motors and above come with solid mounts top and bottom. Too bad the Merc racing motors aren't available at all the Merc dealers! The hull vibrations on the big Pulsare are very minor in my opinion. This was my first experience with solid mounts. All my previous outboard boats had the standard 'fishin' motors with rubber mounts. I got real good at driving rubber mounted go-fast boats, and switching to a hard mounted motor still made a world of difference.
JW I may just have to try the soild mounts and see how they work for me. Not that the boat chine walks or handles bad just always like to have things nice and tight. Thanks for the feedback. I am off to the cottage to play with my boat and a couple of props.
Make sure you give a Lightning ET a try during your prop testing, if you can find one. They are supposed to be great all-around top end props. I'm wondering how they do on Pulsare.

TCAT, YOU ARE 100% CORRECT. THE SOUND OF AN OVER THE HUB PROP IS DEFINITLY COOL! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif AS FAR AS PROPS ARE CONCERNED; I TRIED A TEMPEST 26 AND IT WAS SLOW OUT OF THE HOLE WITH A FULL TANK AND 3 PEOPLE ON BOARD, STILL HAD CHINE WALK. PLAYED WITH THE VENTS A BIT AND IMPROVED THE HOLE SHOT. I THINK I'LL CONTINUE TO SPEND SOME MORE SEAT TIME IN THE BOAT AT 70MPH BEFORE I START CHANGING ANYTHING ELSE. http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/surf.gif
HI JW
Wish I could find an ET to try but they are hard to find and $$$.
The best all-round prop I have tried to date is a Boger modified 25 Trophy Plus small hub with an exhaust ring on it and with 2 PVS plugs out and two 12mm plugs in. It comes out good and hard and still runs 69-70 on GPS.
My 27 Trophy also Boger modified is my fastest prop but slow on launch. But better than my stock 27 Tempest. I am still thinking about seeing what Ritch Boger says about modifying my Tempest over the winter.
Boger is getting a good reputation for working props for a few extra mph...............
I moved the pictures around so I'll just refresh them for you boys. To start here is the video link.
