Does any one know the best prop for top speed on an 89 Vision 221 with a 454 mag? It has a Mirage ss 15" 23 deg.pitch on the bravo one now. There's a whole lotta bajas in my neck of the woods and I want to represent the Mates properly. So far so good but I'm open for suggestions. Thanks in advance . http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

I see clearly that you already have a nice prop on the boat. What kind of RPM's are you turning?Whats your current MPH? Stock engine? Best thing to do is find a marina that will let you experiment with a couple different props.Start with a 25 mirage and go from there.Good luck!

I'm not sure what the top speed is 'never fast enough it seems'the motor is box stock and it turns about 4800 rpm.I believe the 89 454mag was suppose to have 365hp.A wise man once said" speed is money how fast do you want to go? "I'll have to take a gps for a ride to get a top speed .We don't have any loaner marineas in my area that I know of.So it will be difficult to experiment.I was kind of hoping someone with the same boat&motor already did the leg work. Thanks in advance for any more info.

I could be wrong but I think that the 454 was 330hp.I believe 4800 rpm is the redline of that engine.Like you said, speed is money. To go REAL fast you'ed have to build up that engine so it had the torque to turn a 27 pitch prop. Maybe you could pick up a used 25 mirage on ebay.Try it out,if it doesn't work ,relist it http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I,ll see if I can come up w/one of those. The 454 has 330hp,the89 454mag is suppose to have 365hp.I know the mag has few goodies out of the box, like a steel crank, aliuminum intake, and a little more lobe on the cam than the 7.4.I think it's rated for 5000 or 5200.I've read in hotboat mag to not be afraid to spin them up to 5300,but I think 4800 sounds like it's wound up tight enough.I'll have to start playing the lottery, get me some more money.THANKS viking. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I checked the sticker from mercruiser on the valve cover and it says 365hp.mag and w.o.t.5000rpm.The mercruiser repair manual gave the same info.Theres a 330hp and a 365hp the latter being the mag. Thanks ,So what are you getting around in now?

Did yours "Vision" seem to want to porpois when you were just criusing in it?I seem to have to run mine around 3000rpm to get it to settle down. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/bounce.gif

If you tell us what model Checkmate you got it would really help. There is a lot of stainless props out there but, not all will work right on your boat.A 14 1/4 X 19 pitch prop would be a good start.Turbo, and Quicksilver(Mercury) Laser are some nice props.Your RPM operating range is between 4200-4600 .You want a prop that performs the way you want ,tops out at about 4400 RPM's ,then http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gifyou'll be alright.
