i've got a 640 hawk (454, w/ a b&m blower)
stats:
oil pressure 60 lbs
water temp 175 degrees
water pressure 35
oil temp 300 degrees plus..
engine hours 30.. since major overhaul.. builder unknown..
here is the scene.. the boat ran fine until the 29 th hour.. then the oil temp started rising, then went out of sight.. and actually looked like the engine was full of water. (was on a poker run... so i cant fix water in an engine prob at the time.. )
so monday morning i go check the boat out.. pull the dipstick.. and no water in the engine.. so i do an oil change and take the cooler to the shop.. clean a pressure test it, cut open the oil filter and inspect for metal or other contaminants.. nothing out of whack found..
the next step was to inspect the guage/ sending unit.. which seemed to be fine.. then added a mechanical guage to take the guess work out..
the mechanical guage matched the livorsi guage as the oil temp went to 320..@ 3700 rpm and did not drop until at idle.. engine temp/water pressure and watching the water flow out the tail pipes.. all good. the oil looked frothy again. but no water..
thanks in advance

That sounds like it may get difficult to diagnose. I have 2 ideas, but they may be grasping at straws a bit. From what you said, everything looks normal with the exception of the oil temp. To me that leaves a couple of possibilities.... Is the oil cooler stock? Maybe it is just not big enough to handle the extra loads and heat of the now modified motor? The other thing that comes to mind is the bypass valve above the oil cooler adapter in the block. It is possible that the valve is closed or partially closed causing a restriction in the flow of oil to the cooler.

its the big imco cooler.. we ran it on another boat today.. and it ran fine.. so we've taken the cooler out of the equasion.. we thought about the remote adapter.. but didn't have a known good one around the shop.. so we have one comming in tommorow am..
we got quite a few runs across the lake today. tyring different oil grades... what came out at the 5pm meeting was that boat angle had an effect to the problem.. in the am the lake was a bathtub.. and by pm its pretty chopped up by boat traffic.. it took longer in the morning to suds up the oil than it did in the afternoon..
since we know its not water.. and the oil level isn't rising.. we must have air being introduced into the system. (my thought... but i've been wrong all day) but where on a pressure system can you get air in.. and no leak out?
this is driving me crazy.. <<< time for a cold one.. so i guess for now if the new oil adapter doesnt work were gonna yank the engine out and have a look see..

If the oil is foaming up, could there be too much oil in the pan? Maybe the crank is hitting the oil.

good idea.. i'll check the level with the dipstick from the other engine in the boat this morning.. before i get the boat all heated up.. gonna pull the e-tops to gain access to the remote adapter.. (stbd engine) this should also give enough room to see what size pan is on her..
I was thinking too much oil also, OR maybe the windage tray is broken or missing?

just asking are you running a thermostat?
water going to fast won't cool cylinders
also compression test to check for blowby
