Word of caution on the older XR6 motors. They typically came with the small diameter gear case with 1.78:1 gearset. This is considered the fastest gear case in outboards when you put a nose cone on it. The bad news is the internals weren't as strong as the standard case, so look into the XR6 gear case very carefully. It's about $3600 to have Steckbaur (sp) rebuild it properly for you. It will be beefed up totally after he gets through with it, but it's still expensive. The newer XR6 motors come with the standard case, and some of the older ones did too if ordered that way.
I had a 1992 XR6 with the small gearcase on my 17' Pulse, and it ran like a raped ape.......
1995 2100BR/1995 225 Promax/23" Tempest
Raped Ape? Where do you come up with this stuff Jim? Has Barefoot Bob been teaching you something? Anyways, if you have the $ to invest in a good motor, a 2003 may be the way to go. Thats what I'd go, spend the money on a motor I wouldn't have to work on much so it'd save money in the long run, and would be worth more in resale!

By the time you spend 4-5 grand for the 150 in the first place, then stick more than 3 grand more into the gear case, you just wasted your money. To me, if you are going to spend 7-8- grand on a 150, put that towards a new one. I would take my time and look for a good used one. I will check around this week here 440. I have to go to a couple of dealerships this week to do some work and I will ask around.
Just a question 440, what is the ultimate motor you would like for your boat? That may help us look with you...

Now be careful fellas, I said to look at the XR6 gear case very carefully. It may be OK and not need work. He might very well be able to find a '92 - '94 XR6 in excellent shape for just a couple/few thousand dollars and get years of use out of it.............

http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif I've got plenty of time to find the right motor. My evenrude still runs flawlesly. But when the right 150 shows up It's mine haha. For now still looking. lol http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif
Don't rule out a nice 175 or 200 either. 150 stickers are real easy to come by.......
1995 2100BR/1995 225 Promax/23" Tempest
I know that technique. Done it on my 50 Force so the kids can drive it as the license goes up to 40. I have never seen it done on something over 100 but if its that old, its alot easier then the new ones that you can guess the HP when looking at it... Who can't point out a new 300X?

http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gifLet me refraze. A nice V6 merc will do nicly.I am keeping all options open at this point. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
Please do not get me wrong, I am not lecturing here, yes stickers are easy to come by, but if you get in a wreck, when the insurance company checks the serial number, guess who will not be insured? Becareful of the advice that is given out
Thats why I don't put any new ones on. I just peel them off, get all the other crap off with Goo Gone, and leave it blank. It works easier and when it does have problems, like it is right now, its still a 50, no 40 lies for them, just people out on the water. I wouldn't take the change putting new lower HP stickers on...

http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gifI have already talked to my insurence guy he told me as long as they know what is on it and i am paying the rates for that combo i am all good.I can put any motor on it as far as they are concerned i just have to pay the rates. The dnr is a different story.ha ah http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/xxrotflmao.gif
A suggestion, do not always listen to the agent, contact the underwriters, an insurance company would not open them selves up for a lawsuit like that.
Don't want to get caught with that... When you try and change the HP, big trouble, I have asked... They also don't like it when you take off/change stickers...

440, here is the best thing to do and be legal. Buy a carbed 150, swap the 150 carbs for 175 carbs and bingo, you have a 175hp motor on your boat legally. Then you can tune the exhaust, vent the cowl, put in some boyesen reeds and you have a pretty potent legal 150
Yeah... But where we are nobody really ever checks, except insurance if you do something stupid or total it, then the 175 you bought totally screws you up. As Bill said, keep it legal but perform like that 175!

Bottom line is, who cares about a ticket or two, why would you want to risk everything you own if you get in an accident when you get sued.

http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gifYou're right bill they check alot around here and nothing is worth risking everthing I own. especialy when its that simple to get the extra pony's out of a 150 http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif
Up here they next to never check. When you see something as rare as a Bond inspired 'Stream going down at 90 MPH+, you'd think you'd be safe with a 175. Anyways, just fine that good 150 and transform it legally into a 175!

Hey does anybody know what a 1995 XR6 150 is worth? I found one and dont know what to offer the guy http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
you can goto the NADA web site and it will give you the book value. I think it is www.nada.com (http://www.nada.com)

http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gifThe nada gives me a rough idea but theXR6 has 26 cc heads,200 tuner,175 carbs,It's dry stacked and has promod cowling.he's asking 3500.00us what do ya think. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/eyes.gif
Have you actually seen how the motor is? Check it out first, get him to start it if possible, let it run at idle, and work it up a bit. Remember, have the muffs on when you do all of this http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif

No, no, no Z, you can't tell if a motor is good that way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have a compression check done by a certified machanic, give good look over, If all checks out okay, the price is great! Also drain some of the gear lube to make sure that os okay also. A motor that is low on compression will run on the hose because there is no back pressure.

THAT 93 XR6 HAVE THE SMALL GEARCASE OR STANDARD? NICE MOTOR EITHER WAY. PERFECT FOR A 17' LIKE MY SPECTRA. YOU CAN GAIN SOME REAL POWER BY SHAVING THE HEADS A LITTLE AND PUTTING THE 200 HP MOTOR TUNER ON IT. TUNER AND RELIEVED EXHAUST, YOU'RE LOOKING AT 175 HP EASY.
I am the one who knows all!
Zeus is right on there. I can only add that if you relieve the exhaust and install the 200 tuner, you might have to jet the carbs up. My XR6 was a 1992. The 1993 was supposed to have improvements in the idle circuit. It's a strong 150, you'll like it. I had the smaller gearcase, my best prop was a 26" Laser II small hub.
