Ok guys, I took my boat out this weekend and encountered a new problem. The boat is a 96 242 with a 7.4 MPI. When I first took the boat out, it would not go over 4000 RPMs and every now and then, the engine would momentarily shut down and then come back to life. After a while, it continued to get worse. Now, I can't get it over 2000 RPMs and it backfires through the air intake. When I give it throttle it just kills the engine momentarily but never totally shuts off. It idles great. Any ideas?

The first thing that I would do is replace the fuel water seperator. Then check the fuel pressure. It should be around 40 lbs. If not, it is a good chance that the pump is weak. The next step would be to scan the ECU for codes.
