I just bought the boat this week it is a checkmate Spectra 170 It used to be my dad's boat he sold it and I bought it back after 8 yrs of missing the boat! Now I want to make It look like new again. Can anyone recommed some great products E.G polish and cleaners for metal flake paint? Thanks in advance

I used the 3M combination compound/wax., its a light rubbing compound and wax in one application. I found it worked great.

Is the problem with your finish a general problem with the finish chalking. if it is a major problem with chalking try vertglas gel coat restorer, I used it on my dads 1960 lonestar, and that brought the finish back on that old boat. I had tried almost everything else, starbright, polishing coumpoud , you name it. I wish I could do that to my mate, the origianl metelflake on mine was painted over, white by the previous owner.

the only drawback with vertglas is its price.

I have been using mothers polish http://www.mothers.com/ it's for metal and very abraisive but it definilty works on sun faded gelcoat. I have been doing it by hand it comes out really nice, it has some fine scratches and I am going to try to polish those out with regular fiberglass rubbing compount. I tried everything on the market for fiberglass and nothing was abrasive enough to make mine shine except for mothers. shane

Does anyone Know if Flitz works well on gelcoat? I've used it on crome and plastic and it works better than anything else I've tried.

Checkmate uses Flitz on their boats so it should work good for you also. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif

I have heard from quite a few people that Aquabuff is the way to go. I will be using it this summer on my Starflite.

hey robZ, I was just reading your boat specs, looks like your setup is about like mine I wish you were closer to me I'd let you try my 22p prop out, I think I need to go to a 23 or 24. I don't think a raker wrould work on my merc eiteher, but I could be wrong. shane
