Hi guys, I've been a merc fan for years but after a fishing trip in Canada last August I may have changed my mind. (It's a gal thing). We stayed at a resort where the owner had recently got rid of all of his Mercurys and got the Yamahas. I had quite a chat with our guide. He runs a 115 on a 20 foot Lund open bow. Motor runs 8 hours a day continuously except during shore lunch. (about an hour)Otherwise its running at a variety of speeds from idling to all out. It was almost the end of the season and the motor hadn't broken down or not started once. He was very impressed with the dependability and fuel consumption. The guide also works on motors in the off season and said very few yamahas came in for anything other then routine maintenance. They have more problems with tourists hitting rocks and ripping the lower units off. Just thought Id pass this along.....

I'll back you up on the yamahas, I've run them for years and the only time one didnt start was because my kid turned a light switch on and killed the battery.
Another factor people may not be aware of is how quiet they are in the interior, very good sound insulation. My dad has a new 4 stroke 150HP and you honestly cant hear it idle except the water squirter and its quieter than an I/O when at speed. Pretty impressive compared to the old screamer outboards.

I asked about them and got a reply from someone who uses them for his Sea-Tow business. He stated that he runs them up to 2,000 hrs with no problems, then sells them.

I like my screaming, loud, high reving merc. With the light weight cowl and no air silancer for the carbs I think they make more noise that the exhaust.
I have see yamaha's run good though. Had a buddy that had one on a V-King. They have trouble with high rev's. Well at least his did. Would last about a season and then eat a piston. But I am sure that was not the motor's fault.

I have a friend at a high volume dealer that sells both Merc's and Yamaha's and he told me that the big Yamaha's have problems with explosions too.
