Hi I want to update my motor and wanted to know if you can safely put a 150 on this boat as the coast gaurd tag says max hp120. And if I can what would the set back be.With out any set back it pourposes at lower speeds with four people in the boat.It has a 115 evinrude on it now.thanks for any input. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

I wouldn't do it to my boat. It can cause insurance and safety problems.

What size is the boat?
The correct answer is what chris said, but its your boat. I would say a 150 would be no trouble at all

I'd put the highest amount you can being under the law. You don't want to go over the limit because that is when you're in trouble. Get some pics up... Also, I will be adding you to the top speed thread now...
Checkmates may not be the fastest boats on the water, but they are the nicest looking!

Thanks guys. the boat is 16.7ft.My other option is to perc up the 115. a marine mechanic I know said the only difference between a 115 and 140 is the heads and exhaust.Maybe I should go that route. If I do what set back should i use? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/eyes.gif

Also the motor 140hp has bigger cards.
Thats strange that yours is an inch longer than mine and mine is rated for a 150. I am adding a 5" setback manual jackplate and have a set of 2 inch spacers for a total of 7" if I need it.
What prop are you running?
