Hello fellow members! I just found this site and am looking forward to the time when I can browse around. JW and I have the same boats, only mine's faster! (just kidding JW) I'm currently looking into different props and possibly adding a bob's cone over my CLE. Man... the winter in NY is too long.....
http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gifThe Pulsare is an awesome boat! How fast does yours go? I almost bought one that had a 225 Opti-Max and went 77.6 MPH, then tried the Pro-Max and it went slower. The Opti-Max is heavier so that helped. What colour is yours. You should send Chris a picture so he can post it. What prop are you using?

JW has more experiance since he owns the beauty, but I do not recommend a nose cone for your application. In my opinion, you should be breaking the mid 80's (gps) before that is needed and obviously, a nose cone is to run the motor even higher which takes away from the bow lift that your prop provides. The Pulsare needs all the help it can get to get the bow up unless you plan on adding more set back at the same time to help offset the added height. JW can be more specific then me if needed.
Hey Checkmark! Glad to see you finally made it over!

Hey JW, I am correct regarding the low water pick-up and your boat, Right? When I used to work with Checkmates, we packaged the 2100's witheither your pro max or the 3.0 litre 225 merc and I was always taught that the nose cone would hurt the performance by a couple of miles an hour and could possiby blow out. That is still the case today, isn't it? When I think about it, I can't believe that it has been 6 yrs since I worked ( I considered it play) with the Mates and a lot has changed since then. I read up on high perf and still talk to all of my racin buddies, but that isn't the same as driving all of them every week! God I miss that!
http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif80????? What changes have the pulsare made to make it go that fast? The owner of the boat I almost bought has owned Checkmate's forever and has been boating since he was less than 10. He knows the best set-up for that boat and he got 77.6 with the right prop. Really, what changes since 97-99 for the current 02-03 models have made that much of a speed increase. The opti-max should be faster on that boat!

Bill and Z06:
Yep, nose cones generally slow boats down that do not run over 80 mph. The standard case is faster below 80, a Bob's modified case is faster over 85 mph generally... In the case of heavy boats like our Checkmates, we almost universally need the standard case to help float the bow. Now my buddies closed bow Pulsare with the 300 Promax is a different story! He runs a hydraulic jack and the sportmaster case and runs in the upper 80's. He's running the right case for that application. My boat at 70 mph is way too slow for a cone. Since no boat/prop combo is ever equal, Checkmark may be getting more speed with a Bob's cone than a stock case (definately either stock or Bob's is better than the CLE). The only way to tell is do a back to back test with a standard case and a coned case. The 80 mph rule of thumb applies to most setups, but not all. And Z06, there's been no changes to the Pulsare. Bill mentioned 80 mph because that's the 'rule of thumb' speed.

If you are talking the 225 hp, then theoretically, the pro max should be a faster motor if not for where it makes it's horsepower, then weight alone provided the set-up is right. I did not say the pulsare will run in the 80's with a 225, I was trying to say that a boat needs to be running those kind of speeds before a nose cone would be benneficial. A pulsare with a 22 pro max should run around 72-74 (gps) given the right set-up and driver. A lot depends on the driver also. Take JW's boat, if he and I were to go out and run it, I would bet money that he would be 3-4 miles an hour faster than me driving because it has been a couple of years since I have driven that model and never driven JW's particular hull. Every hull is different and performs differently and there are an infinate amount of factors that go into what makes or brakes the performance of a boat down to that particular minute. Also, I don't really believe a carb vs. injected motor is all that fair for everyday comparisons. Anybody can strap on a computerized motor and make it run good where as a carbeb motor is affected by everthing from the relative humidity, air density, air temp, water temp elevation, ect...
Oh yea, one more thing. My plan is to add another 5.5" of setback to my boat for a total of 11" to make up for the lighter weight of my Promax (375) compared to the 3.0 225 motors (475). With my lighter weight and then equal leverage, I should be faster http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

A throw out question just for fun http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Boating or women, which is the bigger mind game?!?!?!?

Now thats a tough question. But I still would have to go with the women. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/sssh.gif

To me, a game is something I have a chance at winning. There's no 'winning' against a woman, so I'll have to go with boating http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

JW,
now those are words of wisdom!
http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/sleep.gifBill, Yesterday I was really tired and must not have been able to read the post you put properly. I now understand what it meant. You should be in the middle 80's before you need a nose cone. Thanks for clearing that up... And as the throw out question, you can master a boat and women are impossible to master, so I would have to go with women http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

Z06,
At least you have a good excuse, I do not know what the heck mine is! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
Come on http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_razz.gif How hard can an excuse be? Blame it on drugs or something stupid like that, or you are really tired, like I am.... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

Hey guys,
My boat is black with teal and white stripes. I have 2 cook jacks mounted back to back to give me 11" of setback. I run a 25" Mach currently, but I'm going to give my 26" Chopper a try next summer and maybe buy a Trophy. I am still up in the air over the nosecone deal. Have talked to Todd at Hydromotive, Bob at Bob's Machine, and Reed at Bullet for their thoughts on the subject and they all think I could be faster with a cone over my cle. The ideal prop gets a variety of answers. I have no GPS to go on, but the speedo reads well past 80, so I would guess 77-78. It turns the Mach at 6400. Reed seems to think I will be pleased with the Chopper, as he used to work at Checkmate and he liked to run them then for their lifting capabilites. I always ran it on my Enchanter, but I guess I listened to everybody say it wouldn't work on the Pulsare instead of actually trying it! I had a chinewalking issue for awhile, but I learned how to drive it to avoid that. Looking forward to summer #2 of getting to know this hull. I keep thinking about the 300X on this thing, and SCT's #'s. The ultimate combo in my opinion!!
300X would go awesome with the Pulsare. With the right setback and prop, you'd easily be in the low-mid 80's which is a good speed for that specific model... Just look at that one for sale; the red one that had the 300X but the motor sold before the boat so too late for that. I suggest you go new, thats if you want to spend the money on however much they are now... 20K? I saw a 99 225 ProMax sell for 16K brand new... I'm not to sure... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

When I bury my speedo hard against the peg above 80 so that it doesn't fluxuate anymore, then I know that I've just achieved 70 mph on the GPS..................

I like that new GPS Merc speedo I always see being sold on Ebay.

But how is the reliability, Merc sure seems to have a lot of problems with their gauges. To me, a bit pricy, but I paid 600 bucks or so to upgrade to Gaffrig's, but well worth it. I still think Merc is the way to go with motors (for now) but they really need to work on all of their accessories. I have not had a chance to try the new electronic shifters that Merc has, I just hope it is a hell of alot better than the commander 3000 series. I am stuck with Mercs throttle because Checkmate won't put in the offshore throttles in the 240. I guess if I don't like it, I will have to convert it myself http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_mad.gif
I'd still say Gaffrig's are the way to go. If you really want accurate speeds all the time, spend the money on a GPS. You can place it anywhere you want by velco, and it sticks good, as I have seen one at 95, and none of 'Mates will be at that speed soon... As for Merc... Keep up the good work with your motors (~Dreaming of 300X~)

On my diplomat I had, I did not even have the speedo connected, I ust went by gps. (yes, Rick, I reconnected it)
LOL... You had to tell Rick that you connected it, or else he would have some mad buyers eh...
