Here are a few vintage Starflite pics Jason sent me. He said the Starflite pics are from the 1985 Shootout at Dillon Lake. The Starflite was powered by a Evinrude V8 and ran close to 90 MPH according to the corrected speedo.

Very neat shots!!
I am lucky enough to live within a couple hours of Kunkels shop and have been there a couple times.
Unfortunately I have been one of the many "poh folks" that could only afford to drool while there http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
Came very close a couple times though.
For any one shopping for a boat, these guys are a class act and probably know more (real info not BS hype) about setting up Checkmates than anyone in the world and are the nicest guys you'll ever meet!
When I was selling at a competing dealer in the late '80's if I got a customer that told me they were shopping at Kunkel's, that told me they were doing their home work and I told them to go there. (our dealership was pretty weak on performance and service)

Gary,

Did you see the thread about the 108 MPH Convincor Kunkels built for a customer? It's kicking around in main somewhere. And Dave, did a motor build up with the Kunkels and it dynoed at some crazy HP number. There is a video kicking around here of Dave's motor running. Those guys build some SERIOUS I/O motors.

Chris I'm not sure if you were referring to my engine, but Kunkels did not built it. Performance Marine in Bolton Landing, NY did. Kunkels deals in procharger only not whipple to the best of my knowledge.

you can barely see where the decal was pulled off of my checkmate
its from a Performance Marine decal - so mine probably came from
there at some point. Hmm..

I did take a nice 7 1/2 hour ride to Kunkels Marine. First time ever going over 1 hour north on 77 . I left friday and spent friday night in Mansfield and was at Kunkels saturday morning. The scenery was super going threw the mountains the hole way.

I have been kicking around a bigger boat. And I knew Kunkel's had some 300 Convincors with some engines that really thumped. I don't think I seen a stock engine part in the whole shop. All the work I seen done on these boats looked excellent, no corners cut or sloppy work. The craftsmanship and pride taken on these boats is top notch. If you want speed with quality work I recommend Kunkel's. I guarantee if you tell them what size Checkmate you have and how fast you want to go they will tell you exactly what HP engine you need and what the torque needs to be. Why guess just ask somebody that has already done it. Oh selling Checkmates since 1971 might have something to do with it also. !!!!!!

That place is immaculate. Given them a bit of money over the years, usually fixing stuff I mess up. I was over there on Thursday but it was just to pick up a fuel/water separator and some drive lube, wish I was doing some boat shopping. They also had a sweet Olds 442 sitting in the front room.

The 442 was super slick and 4 sale frame off resto

Going to give a few updates to the '03 Convincor we bought from Kunkel's in 2004. The boat has a few new items on it now. Lots and lots of red bezels, handles, switches, etc. Jason installed a ProCharger on it for us two years ago. Love It! Love It! Love It! The charger made the 'mate get up and run just like a dream. We are getting 80+ out of it on Lake Cumberland. Jason did a super job and has been a big help with any questions or issues that we have had over the years. Harold is also a wealth of information. Truly a great person. Always an honest answer to any question. This is without a doubt, the best dealership we have ever dealt with hands down. Cannot say enough good about them. Would love to post some updated pictures of the old girl, but can't just yet. Trying to find out how though. Checkmates Rule!:thumb:

I know this is a little off topic But had to do it SCT
That was the name of Bill Combs bar in Mansfield Ohio just spelled different. We tore every thing out of the building after it closed 19 years ago. Ask SCT what he did to the Surburban on the way back to Bucyrus one day. That was fun.

Alan- I forgot all about that trip! Remember when the mall officials had the sheriff deputies kick us out? I do remember that I was the only person w/ a driver's licence at the time though........

Cheers-

Didn't I have to right a check to pay the wrecker driver. You did pay me back though. Remember Loyd falling threw the ceiling and breaking his foot. And I do remember the deputies making us leave. Even Sean didn't have his license at the time. I know I didn't. Alan
