how do these props compare to a laserII. are these mainly for top end? im mean if i get one of these, will i still be able to get out of the water with a full boat?

Choppers are best for boats that can honestly run 1/2 of the prop out of the water at top speed. With your hull and motor, you might very well be able to run one flat out. The problem with choppers is the hole-shot. A light boat will come out of the hole like a bandit with a chopper prop, a heavier boat will suffer hole-shot real bad. I'd say try one if you can get a good price, if it doesnt work then sell it.

MOST Checkmate hulls cannot run a chopper effectively.

JW is right the chopper will be really bad on hole shot on your boat. The chopper is an over the hub exhaust prop it will break loose and spin up really badly on launch But if you have a hydraulic transom lift you can did it real deep down it will hook better and then you can get it way up at speed it may be OK. Best thing about a chopper is the sound of the boat running flat out trimmed out nothing sounds like a merc running an over the hub exhaust prop flat out. There are a lot of better props out there for your rig.

But for 50.00 grab it is worth it just for the sound. It will work too just the bottom end is bad. Back in the 80's I used to run a V-Mate II with a 200 Max and a 24 Chopper with one of the first hydraulic transoms it was a great boat and the best prop going for speed back then.

Matt:

I have a laser 2 on my 175 efi and I dont like it, the prop blows out on high speed turns, it doesnt hang on anything like my 4 blade did, hole shot is ok.

I,M CURRENTLY RUNNING A DAH WORKED MERC CHOPPER ON MY PULSARE AND LOVE THE PROP. IF YOU GUN THE MOTOR OUT OF THE HOLE THE PROP WILL BLOW OUT AND EFFECT HOLE SHOT BUT IF YOU FEATHER THE THROTTLE ON UP THE BOAT COMES OUT OF THE HOLE NICELY AND EXCELLERATES GREAT. THE MIDRANGE PUNCH IS STRONG AND THE SOUND OF THE PROP EVEN BETTER!! http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Hey Tim, the best I've seen is over 72mph but the boat is a handful at that speed. I think I will change my hyd. jack plate to 10-12" of set back. It should settle the chine walk down but it sure is fun to challange the boat right now!!
Have a great time in FL. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

what is the pitch on the laser? im not too worried about the blow out durring turning. hole shot shouldnt be a problem for me. i dont have a whole lot of weight to lift.

Mine is a 23, and it doesnt take much of a turn to make it lose its bite, I am looking for a tempest.

JW
03-31-2005, 08:24 PM
If you're making hard turns and you want to keep bite, then switch to a 23" High 5. You'll lose about 5 mph top end though. The Tempest is a larger diameter prop made for heavier longer boats with bigger power, your 175 may not like it. You don't have quite the torque to spin a Tempest like you can spin a Laser II.

If you want to maintain bite in turns and not lose a lot in top end, you should try a Trophy Plus instead. It's the smaller diameter like the Laser II, with the added bite of the extra blade (and it's a newer technology design)

Of course, it never hurts to try different props http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif

I might be picking up an XR2 for the Vector with a 2:1 gear case. I'll be needing to play with props soon also. $$$

I ran a copper on the trimate when I was doing some testing with differant props. The hole shot was real bad the the top end was the same as the laser. The chopper just did not seem to carry the boat as well as the laser.

JW, an XR2. Very cool. Got a brand new rapture 25p that you can try. I have yet to run it.

I'm thinking of trying a Ballistic http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/xxrotflmao.gif

Did you read that review in B&W? They gave the Ballistic high marks. Weird looking thing with the blade clipped like that.

As far as choppers go, I had one on my Enchanter that was my favorite prop. They need to be built with extra cup and they hook up really well. The fun part is trying to handle them at WOT. Made it fun to drive for sure.

I ran a 24 chopper on the pulse: tough out of the hole, but when it hooked up it was wicked, great mid range punch, and higher RPM's

While on the subject of props and rigging , iam going to need help setting up the black enchanter(Ebay enchanter) .it has an aluminum prop and motor is on transom set on lowest setting.OC.

Brian
04-03-2005, 04:57 PM
OC first start by measuring the drive shaft height from the bottom of the boat, should be somewere around 2-3" above the pad. GET RID OF THAT ALUMINUM PROP. Get a good stainless. What are you looking to do with it ski, speed, etc.?

JW
04-03-2005, 05:07 PM
I think Brian means the propshaft should be 2-3" BELOW the pad..... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif

Brian,
I was running a 27p 4 blade. Man what a prop. Killer hole shot, trim the bow where ever you want it. But at WOT the boat developed a wiggle that started in the stern and worked forward. Not chine walk. A wiggle. Installed solid mounts and made sure the steering was tight but that was no help. Just about sold the boat. Switched to the laser and it was like a differant boat. Traded the prop in for a 25p rapture. Have not run the new prop yet.

illMATTic... did you get with Brian on that Chopper yet??? His 24 may be a bit low on pitch for that 200 on your hull, but it's a good starting point! I have a few props you can try out if we end up gathering at Bay City Hooters this summer! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

If you don't want Brian's prop...please let me know ASAP...I'll add it to my collection! Jim.
