View Full Version : Fastest Checkmate Ever...
http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gifThis is almost a poll except that I don't know what they answers are. What is the fastest Checkmate ever made? What motor did this boat have?

I have no idea, but I like that pic of the 250xs! Good article in B&W about this engine on a 21' Bullet.
I'm not sure the way the chines are designed on a check, if you could handle one over 100. Just my thought.
http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gifThanks for the compliment on my avator. It looks a little weird in a square. but in reality, it appears to be an awesome motor. B&W? Whats that? I bet once you say it I will know it but I am unclear now. I havn't heard much of a checkmate that does over 100... Anybody???? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gifReally? What Checkmate boat can do over 100? I have never heard of one? Was it some custom one? Are there any new Checkmates that will run 100+?

B&W means Bass and Walleye Boats magazine. Excellent articles on setup and performance oriented stuff. I like the specs on the tests
they run; gives me an idea what props they are
running on what hulls, setback, etc..
I have heard Checkmate won many races back in the 70's with Enchanters and other hulls. They don't put out a production hull that will do 100, but I'm sure they or someone has dropped a couple race big blocks in a convincor and hit triple digits!
Those bass boat just ain' for fishin'. I used to be able to get behind the wheel of a Gambler to do some testing back in the earl and mid 90's. What an awesome boat the was. I can remember hitting 76-77 on speedo back the with Merc 150 XR6's. Put an Evinrude 200 EXP on a Gambler Ski boat once and all I can remember thing the first time I put my foot to the floor was HOLY SH***. I think the sppedo was reading mid 80's, but the eyes were watering too much to really tell.

Their are many Check's running over 100 MPH......2 251's and a 242 in the virginia area all running 100 + ......fastest i personally have heard of was a enforcer i/o (23').......with twin turbocharged motor(don't recall the HP) that ran 120+ MPH.

There is a lake not to far from my house that has a few checkmate that will easy hit 100+.It takes big horse power to make these big check fly.The 251 seem to be the most common check to hit 100+.They all have one thing in common...BLOWERS @ 8 pounds of boast!
http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/sssh.gifI would love to see a Check go over 100. I have personally not so it would be an awesome experience. I may see 2-3 different Checks through the whole summer... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

MY check wont hit 100 but I wish it did. I have a 225 Yamaha built to about 280 horse and I was told by the machine shop it will run around 7,000 rpm. With a 26 pitch chopper I can run 77mph @ 5900 rpm. Every other prop I tried runs higher rpms but less speed. Is it possible to get my 1,800 lb check going faster than 77mph or should I let it go and be happy that I can beat every other boat my size? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif

I WOULDNT MESS WITH IT UNLESS YOU GET BEAT! AND IF YOU GET BEAT ON TOP END, THEN PUT A DRAG PROP ON IT AND QUIT RACING AS SOON AS YOU TOP OUT, MAKE HIM THINK HE COULDNT CATCH YOU ANYWAY!
I am the one who knows all!
CJ, is your 77 speedo or GPS? If it is GPS, than I would try Yamahas Drag prop also. You shoud tell us your whole set up, set back, height ect... so we can give you an idea if there is room to play.
How would something like an ET work? They are a good top end prop... Should get you a few extra MPH

hey Bill, well, to be very honest with you, I am not real familiar yet with all the boat lingo when you say set back ect.. I can tell you that i have a CMC manual hydraulic jack plate and its up all the way but about an inch and a half.I cant get it up any higher. I got my boat late last year and did'nt really have the funds for the auto jack plate. I will be getting it soon. The one i assume I have THe 5 inch setback because I see they have a 10 inch setback as well.Would that 1 1/2 inches make a mph or two? I have a speedo not gps. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif
CJ, better to admit that you don't know than to go along with it and possibly mess things up. More than likely your set back is 5.5 inches. When i ask about height, I measure the cavitation lates relativity to the bottom of the boat. First, do you have a water pressure gauge? that is a must. To measure the motor height, I take a 6 goot straight edge and run it from the bottom of the cavitation plate anlon the bottom of the boat, making sure that the cavitation plate is on a horozontal plane with the bottom of the boat as well. A good starting point is the plate to be 3 inches above the bottom, then go up from there. You need to find out what your motor is cabable of running (RPM's) at wide open throttle. Since it has been massaged some, you might want to talk to the mechanic who did the work. You need that info to see what size prop you should be running. Ultimately, you are probably only running 70-72 mph now, speedo's read on the high side. I would say with the proper set up and a little time behind the wheel, you should be able to hit 75-77 on gps, real speed.
If you go looking for setup advice on Scream and Fly, I have one helpful hint. All the gear heads over there measure motor height a different way. They measure the propshaft center as compared to the pad. In other words, you measure from the center of the propshaft to the bottom of your pad using your 4' straight edge. A 'typical' fast Checkmate likes to start approx. 2" below the pad. You can go higher if you have a REALLY fast Checkmate and your water pickup allows it, and you want to go lower (about 3.5" below the pad) if you also want to have good skiing performance.
On Scream and Fly, the gear heads measure the distance between the center of the propshaft and the bottom of the pad.
1995 2100BR/1995 225 Promax/23" Tempest
That is how we did it in racing JW, but it is much simpler to explain to unknowing people using the cavitation plate. To get ACCURATE measurements using propshaft, you should use a jig, which most people don't have
Not to sound like anyone hear, but JW, are you trying to get people over on Scream and Fly. I agree, it is a great place, but this place things get around more because of less people and I like it here... Thanks You GuyS!!!!

I was just trying to make things a little easier. If you have never done this kind of measureing, it is MUCH easier and more fool proof to go off of the cavitataion plate relative to the bottom of the boat. I think JW was referencing s&f incase CJ was over there and saw different numbers. The three inches that I gave to start is what Checkmate recommends to start, I was just paraphrasing them
I caught ya man... I am just wondering, what is the best manufacture, in your opinion, for jack plates?

That I can't answer, i ahve only used CMCand have not compared it to others.
Ok... I havn't heard much bad about CMC, but there must be other good ones out there...

Wow guys, its all great advice but you still lost me.I am sorry I am so not understanding the terms. The guy who built the motor says it should run about 7,000rpms.( but not to run it there for any length of time) I know he did move the motor up a bolt hole since my jack plate would'nt go up further. He did show me that when you look down the bottom of the boat from the bow the scag is flush with the bottom of the boat.Im not sure what you mean by cavatation plate.Like I said, I am still learning all this as I go. Thanks to all of you for your patients. To bad none of you live in Pa, I would love to have you over to my neck of the woods and get my check set up right. There are not very many performance shops where I live.as far as props go, The speed shop who built the motor lets me try props and I have yet to find one better than my 26 pitch chopper. Actually I do not have a working water guage. I will put that 1st on my list. I do have low water pick up too.
CJ, if you go over to this thread, http://www.checkmate-boats.com/groupee/forums?a=tpc&s=8626072361&f=8206095561&m=2846099581, you'll be able to look up almost any term you want... It has helped me too, ALOT

Anything to help. That list HAS helped me alot too with all the terminology that I would never need to know. Good idea, I should print it out too....
