how fast???

I have an 85 diplomat with a 5.0 with a "few" mods to the engine. I'm running around 300 hp and was wondering what max speed this style of hull will handle. According to a couple of sources if I exceed 5000 rpm I should bump the prop up a pitch, but if I follow that logic I would be running a 23 pitch and potentially 85+ mph. I don't want to hurt the boat or myself but love to go fast. How fast is fast?

An '85 Diplomat with 300 hp is running around 72 mph MAX on gps, with the perfect prop. No way you'll be running 85 mph with a 23" prop and the standard Alpha lower unit.
That said, a boat is 'too fast' when it begins to handle poorly. Just keep adding power and prop until it feels dangerous, and then it's too fast http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

With the 300X, it barely gets that speed.

Checkmate basically streched the bottom and added freeboard to the enchanter to create the Diplomat. They always ran faster than most people expected.

The Diplomat is a fast boat, but not 85...
