My later to be 2004 Impala SS. I saw it today in the newspaper for the first time and fell in love with it. I immediately called up my local dealer and ordered one. I was officially the first person to order the car. It has the 240 horsepower supercharged engine, the same you could find in the Grand Prix GTP. It has a 5 speed auto (wish it was a stick though) and only comes in black. has dual exhaust with chrome tips. I'll probably get it sometime is September... Cost me around #40 K, not sure yet as the details arn't set out. All I know is that I have one reserved. Whats all your opinions??? In mine, its awesome!!! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

I like it, but it doesn't look much different than the regular Impala.

They added some ground effects, the dual exhaust with chrome tips, a Corvette inspired rear end by covering up some of the lights. From far it looks like a normal one somewhat. but when it burns rubber, then you know its a SS!!! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Nice! But wouldn't you rather buy a nice hot boat that won't lose much value over the years, instead of a new car that will lose half it's value in the first 12 months???????

I know I know... But I have dying for GM to make a SS for the Impala for the last few years, and my wish was granted. I am in love with this car. I don't know how I'll get a boat? I might have to stay with my Aluminum and my 50 Force if they ever fix it...

Hey Z, have you ever driven an Impala? I had one as a rental, so it had the regular engine and no plastic add ons, and I returned it and got a different car. I hate to say it, other than the Vette, GM falls way short on their cars! My advice, drive it before you buy it.

I have driven the regular one and I though it was all right. I am still going to take one out before I pay for it... With all the SS features, I think it will be a pretty good car. Hope so...

ZO6,
I don't mean to burst your bubble, but to be fore warned is sometimes a good thing. First let me start by saying I am a mechanic for the New York City Police Department. We have tons of Impalas. So I can say that I have had alot of experience with these cars. There is nothing I don't know about them. Some of the things I am about to tell you may never happen to your car because I am sure you will not beat it up like the N.Y.C. cops do, BUT you should know these things anyway.
First and foremost--- That car has an aluminum front cradle. THEY BEND. We have replaced every one of them at least once. Chevrolet had a recall on them, but didn't let the public know about it. They know there is a problem but it is hush-hush. You may say that yours wont bend because of the fact that you wont beat on it. This may be true, but the fact is they are bending in under 20k miles. Maybe under normal conditions it will last 50k miles, I don't know for sure. It is bending right under the left motor mount. There is a huge hole in the frame to allow the mount to sit inside it, this creates a weak spot. The frame bends, then the motor drops down enough to cause the left axle to rub up against the frame in turn blowing out the boot and axle. Their new design frame is NO BETTER. Next major problem, the "A" pillar is cracking. This is where the front door hinges bolt to the body. The pillar is cracking causing the doors not to close, sometimes the upper hinge falls off the pillar entirely. Not good. On all the cars, the electric coolant fans burn out. There is a recall to add an updated fan shield on the primary fan. It is too close to the exhaust manifold, the heat from the exhaust causes the fans to fail. The jury is still out on this fix, we just updated all the cars, I probably wont know the effects until the Summer. On a good note, we have had almost no engine related failures. They run great. It is too bad the frame and body is not up to par. I can't see them upgrading the body or chassis just because the call the new cars an "SS". If you want to see some pictures of the carnage, let me know. i can take some on Monday and send the to Chris to post. Sorry for the bad news.

I forgot to mention.
I am a die hard Chevrolet lover. Every car I have ever owned or raced was/is a Chevrolet. However, next to the Vega, this car is their biggest piece of ****. Their engineers should be embarassed. By the way, I have met a few of their engineers when they came down to the shop to inspect the cars. They were real nice people, but I didn't agree with their fixes for the problems. I am sure that it is a corporate thing. They know as well as I do, it wont fix anything.

I gather most of the police cars are 3.8's. That engine is bullet proof. One of the sales reps for a company I deal with has an Impala. I asked him how he liked it, and he told me it was a piece of crap. He's working on his second transmission with only 30K on the car. He said he had all kinds of problems with the first transmission, and after three trips to the dealership, he demanded a new one. He now said he is starting to have the same problems with the second. He does have the smaller 3.4 Litre engine though.

I agree with Bill 100%. If you want 240+ horsepower and reliability and resale value in one 4-door car, then you have to go: Honda Accord V6, Nissan Altima/Maxima V6, Suburu WRX, Toyota Camry V6, etc......
It's too bad, but that's the way it is......

Chris,
You are correct. All the marked police cars are 3.8 liter. Some of the unmarked are 3.4 liter. But, the transmissions are the same for both motors. We have not been experiencing many transmission related failures. We had a bunch of them blow up this winter, but we are attributing the failures to the cops spinning the tires in the snow then keeping their foot into it once the tires bite on the clean asphalt. This causes one of two scenerios. 1- the final drive or differential blows the spider gears. 2- The planetary gears blow which usually takes the trans. case with it. I just had 1 on my lift Friday with a ventilated trans case due to exploded planetary gears.

ZO6;
I will get you some pictures this week. You can be the judge for yourself. I have only a few good things to say. As I said, the motors run great. Hardly any problems at all. the cars handle well, plently of power. In my opinion, the Bonneville SSE is a far superior car. It still has a steel cradle. I have not seen any of its' doors fall off yet either.
I have 2 pictures here I can send to Chris to post. They don't show anything up close. They are just of a crash job I did recently. I had to pull the motor, trans and cradle assembly out to do the repair. If you look close at the shot of the motor assembly, you can see the aluminum cradle all bent up from the hit. Look at the passenger side.

Chris

Vinny, what about the Grand Prix, what's it like?

It's a little cheaper than the Bonny and you can still get the 3.8.

I think the Grand Prix is a great car. In fact, I am in the market for one right now. I will be going to look a '98 tomorrow morning. I need a car to get back and forth to work with. I am tired of getting my new Tahoe covered with salt from the snow every day.
The Grand Prix has a steel cradle. The same power is available as the Impala and the Bonneville. Trans. would be the same as well.

To be honest I was surprised when the guy told me he had tranny problems. GM don't usually have very many powertrain problems. Must have been a friday afternoon car or something.

Correction, When I said GM cars, I meant Chevy, my old man has what I call a grampa car, a Park Ave Ultra with the supercharged 3.8. That is a nice car. I pick it up from him once a month to detail it and I love to drive that thing. It is fast, handles great when you throw it into a turn and refined on the highway. I agree with JW 110% For that kind of market that he stated, those cars are the way to go. My mother picked up a 2003 Miata for a little toy last fall. She and my dad got the one built to go run SCCA, and man, fast, fun, awesome, tight, you name it. How do you beat 25 grand for a convertable like that, and race ready if you want. Unfortunately here, there is also more salt than snow, so the Miata was put away for the winter, but I can't wait to pick that little BI**H up and run it to my shop to work on that. The only problem I have with that little car is my mom put HOT FLASH on the plates which is a little embarrassing for me , a 32 year old male. Boy, do I get funny looks when I am behind the wheel of that. Maybe she did that on purpose, so I would not ask to borrow it.

Chris--Thanks for posting the pictures.
The first picture is of the passenger side motor mount. That horseshoe shaped piece wraps around the bottom of the right side of the engine. Basically it wraps around the oil pan. It is a weak link--it bends. As you can see, (from the third picture) it sits inside a hole in an aluminum cradle. The cradle is very weak here as well. The third picture shows the hole the mount sits in. As you can see, the entire weight of the motor rests on a thin 1/4" piece of aluminum. When these 2 things bend enough, it causes the motor to drop. This causes the right axle to rub up against the cradle, which blows the c-v boot. The grease flies out, then soon after, the joint breaks.
Picture #2 shows the brackets that Chevrolet made us rivet on all of the front doors. The reason is that the doors were tearing off of the "A" pillars. Picture # 4 shows a repaired "A" pillar.

Maybe the police should start using Honda's or Toyotas for their Squad cars. Chevy should bring back the impala SS of a couple of years ago and not even bother with that little thing. To me, the new Impala is an overpriced Cavalier.

Bill;
I agree with you. We didn't have any problems with the older Caprices' up to the last model year '96. Our highway cars were actually Impala "SS", but without the trim. They had the same handling and motor packages. Those are great cars.
One thing is for sure, New York City cops would find a way to destroy any type of car. But, this car is the worst I have seen in my 15 years on the job with them.

Sorry, that is just my opinion. When I travel, I normally rent a car because Steph does not like to fly. When I got the Impala this summer and drove it 1000 miles to my destination, I hated the thing so much, I took it in to the rental place and echanged it and what do I get stuck with, but a cavalier. To me, it was the same damn thing, just a little smaller. Also, I do alot of work for our local car dealer and see and hear the "horror stories" I think think Chevy is lacking when it comes to cars, minus the latest generation Vette. Just my opinion.

I think American car company engineers need to take some lessons from the Japanese and German car companies. WE spend too much money on making it look good and not enough on quality. The foriegn compamies appear to concentrate on quality and practicality, then bleand apperance into it. I have a freind who runs a Chevy Venture plant in Atlanta, and he is always telling me that it get frustrating because the design teams are told to design from the outside in, when it should be the other way around.
I bet Vinny does not worry about job security http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

Spend a little money now and go rent one, drive it around and see what you think. Yes the SS is a little different, but the car is basicly the same. So drive one around for a week, take a trip. Better to spend a little now to find out how you like it, and the family likes/fits the car.

You are right. Job security for me is not an issue. I have more work everyday than can be done in a day. No matter what kind of car they buy, it will never hold up. But, these Impalas' have just rubbed me the wrong way with their long list of problems.

ZO6,
If you are looking for something that G.M. makes which is comparable to the "SS Impala", maybe you would consider a Bonneville SSE. They can be ordered supercharged as well. They also have a much better cradle, it is made of steel.

Sorry if I burst your bubble with all the bad news. I just wanted you to be forewarned.

Bill
02-25-2003, 08:27 PM
Vinny, you think a company would build a car for the police, and go from there. Look at the Hummer, built for the military, turned into a very popular truck for the public. Good point about the Bonneville Vinny, or how about the Grand Prix GTP if you want to save a few bucks over the Bonneville.

Vinny sounds like he has a wealth of knowledge, and I agree with JW also, look at all of the negatives here and Gus has a great suggestion, rent one, that is how I gather an opinion.

I wouldn't have to pay. Because I have bought over 30 some odd cars since I could drive. They'd just let me take one for a while. I have drove them before. I don't know for sure that the GTP is available supercharged. I think that is what ZO6 wants. However, in my opinion, the Grand Prix is an excellent car. It too has a steel cradle, with the same powertrain as either the Bonneville, Impala, Monte Carlo. By the way, the 2000 and newer Monte Carlo has the same aluminum cradle that is in the Impalas'.
On a side note, I am looking for a late 90's Grand Prix or Monte Carlo as a knock around car. I am trying to save the miles from adding up to quickly on my 2002 Tahoe.

Bill

Vinny, When I was at a NASCAR race at Pocono this past summer, Pontiac had the next generation Grand Prix there with a supercharger, BUT, that may have been "special" for Pontiacs display. That was around the time Pontiac started showing hwat the new body style would look like for NASCAR.
I too hate racking up the miles, that is why I rent cars when I travel unless I take the boat.

Zeus,
I guess you guys have heard of the Crown Vic. gas tank explosions. It looks like Ford built another Pinto. You have to see Fords fix for that problem. It wont help at all. All we do is put a little piece of 1/2" rubber shaped like a smiley face on the rear end cover around the bottom half of the bolts. Then we put more rubber under the gas tank straps, and plastic shields behind the outer edge of the rear end housing by the shocks and spring purches. This is supposed to insulate the tank from rupturing when hit from the rear. Ford claims it will eliminate sparks from metal to metal contact. I guess they forgot that the DUAL EXHAUST is between the rear and the gas tank. MORONS!!! Besides this problem, the '93-'97 Crown Vics would crush down the rear body mounts, which eventually lead to the body crimping off the rear brake line. In '98-2002, they fixed the body mounts, but came up with a new designed bracketry for holding the rear end to the chassis at the control arms. The tabs were cracking off the chassis. So, they came up with these extra gussets that we had to weld on. So far, it seems to be holding. We got a few 2003 Crown Vics, but so far I haven't seen any problems YET. Still only a few out there. They did switch over to a different front end. They use a coil over front spring and shock. Along with an aluminum front cross member that stretches from left to right. All the suspension parts are hung on that crossmember. It should be interesting when these cars get hit.

I think the Avalanche is as ugly as sin. I do think the conversion system is neat, but it's a god aweful ugly truck. Way too much body cladding for my tastes.

And, I think the fact GM adopted the Avalanche style front end on the Chev pickup truck is a huge mistake. I haven't talked to one person yet that thinks it looks better than it did.

I agree that towing capacity is a boater's concern but I can tell you this...my little 3.0 L V6 pulls my Pulsare way better than my Dakota ever did! As for the Tundra, maybe someday Toyota will open their eyes and build a diesel engine, drop it into a 3/4 ton version of the Tundra and place themselves into the "big boys" league. For now I can still see Toyota sitting back wondering why their trucks are not considered work horses!

I feel the need for speed!

Yeah... I'd love to see Toyota put some actual power into the trucks. I like their styling, its great! I like my Avalanche better though...

Speed, I agree with you, I was just stating my preferance, and even as far as GM goes, I would never buy a half ton truck again, even though I don't need a 2/3 ton truck. I like the stronger tranny, suspension, frame, and all the extra reinforcement that you do not get in the half ton plus the bigger motors. I am not a diesel fan, I like the big gas V-8's. I know, less gas mileage, but I like acceleration!!!

I like almost all of GMC and Chevy' designs. When it comes to Dodge/Ford, does not do anything for me... Toyota is alright with the SUV's and stuff, but for a real truck, a Silverado/Sierra 2500, or 3500 HD is the way to go!!!

I agree Chris, the new GMC grill is alot more tolerable than the Chevy. When the new Dodge came out a year and a half ago, I hated it, now it has grown on me and I like the way the Super Duty Fords look, but I have to stick with the GMC. The best thing with the Ford is you can stck 33.5 inch tires on the factory wheels without modifying anything. The biggest I can go on my GMC is 31's without lifting her.

Alrighty. Word on my vehicle situation. My Impala is still ordered but the details arn't worked out yet. My wife also wants to be replacing our van as the warranty is up. We are looking at the Kia Sorento, not a bad little SUV. SHe likes the Sodena, but it looked too much like a Villager... I am keeping my Avalanche, Impala SS, then Sorento probably. I may even find a nice Chevelle... Too many cars some may think, I don't have enough garage space... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Z, inhaleing too much smoke? Why waste your time with a Kia? I do work for a dealer that sells Kia and the sales people don't even like to sell them. Kia does not even clear coat those things. Three words. Cheap, Cheap, Cheap. Don't ever get in a wreck with one. You might as well total it if you come in contact with somehting going more than 10 MPH.

Probably true, but cold!
Bayliners are good at what they are for, cheap basic transportation. I have to hand it to Bayliner, they've kept the other 'generic' brands pricing in check, which sort of keeps the better brands pricing down some too.
When you think about it, you can buy a 20' I/O Bayliner on a trailer for $12,000 with a V6 on sale. A 22' 'Top Brand' boat with all the fun toys will lose that much in resale value in the first two years you own it. So in comparison, you can throw away a Bayliner in two years and not be out anything compared to what you lose with the top brands......And a Bayliner will actually last 10 years before you need to throw it away! LOLOL

Hey CMZ, I am getting the Impala and if you actually read, I am deciding and looking at these Kia'. I test drive and take out tons of vehicles before I buy them. Again, I just fell in love with the Silverado SS!!! I might get that now along with the Impala SS and get rid of my stupid van. That would completly throw away the new/used Checkmate. I still say a Pulsare would go perfect with my Avalanche or maybe the Silverado SS. I really don't want no Kia, wife just liked them and I let her look. Now, what is up with you man, you either seem to hate me, or like dissing everyone. Right, now you appear to hate me, so basically f**k off. The guy was still fishing and when he went to start the boat it was dead. So I was out in the Mate and he waved me down. I tried giving him a boost but it still wouldn't start. So he asked if I'd tow him in, which was like 4 Miles. So I said let me go and get a tow line and I'll come back. Z, maybe it is because you appear to be all talk and no action and Zues is just riding you on it. You are always buying something, which always comes to buying nothing. You post pictures of things you are going to buy, are you all talk or what. We are Checkmate owners who have somthing in common wether ii be boats or the cars we tow them with. Once and awhile we will disagree with someone else and point it out. Obviously, we do not live in a perfect world where everyone likes eachother, but if we all want to participate in this forum that Chris, JW, and Gus spend so much time on, then we need to tolerate eachother. If you have a problem with Zues messing with you invite him to a private topic to stop it and qiut acting like you are 14. Get over it man and enjoy the day. The Pulsare will or will not sell at the end of this month/beginning of next. There is ONE person that it will sell to if the wife turns around, and if he doesn't find something else first. It's off the market until then, and he's the only one I'll offer it to at that time. I owe him that much.
If he finds something better, and mine does go back up for sale, then I'll open it back up for everyone. Those are big IF's though. It's a heck of a boat. You won't find a Pulsare this nice for under 16 grand. No way.
