transom problems

i am re biulding a 1978 enchanter my transom is not cracked i took off the 150 merc that came with boat and put on a 1996 johnson 150 why do the transoms crack and how do i prevent it from happing to my boat

stand on the cavitation plate and try to get the transom to move. if it seems solid dont worry about it. Mine is an 82 with origional wood w/ no movement.

Transomes crack for different reasons stress from too much horsepower, poor set-ups,wave jumping, age and water damage if you still have the motor off inspect the hole running through the transom make sure there is on moisture take a small screw driver and touch the wood firmly if you see water or leave a dent on the wood have a glass man look at it http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Reed
