Jrumon....... I grew up in Dearborn Hts. Where was Action Marine located.
I can remember Byrd Marine (telegraph and Mich Ave), K&M in Redford ( They actually sold Checkmates back about 10 years ago).
Then there was the one on Telegraph around Warren Rd, was that it?
it looks like a great boat real fun and fast http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif

I love how low the older Checkmates are. Thats what they are famous for http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/surf.gif
Nothing like driving a low profile checkmate with no windshield, wind in your face and haulin @ss! The big windshield kills the look of some of theses boats I think. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif

Diplomat82...
Action Marine was on Van Born & Telegraph... (east of tele). It was an old gas/service station building that he was selling Checkmate and Hydrostream boats from. Sammy was the owner who put together some killer boats of the time... he was famous for selling you a hull and a motor "seperate"...
Like my 140 dressed in 90 stickers http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/sssh.gif
Action Marine closed around 1983ish...
Anyone know what ever happened to SAMMY...??? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif
Maybe the "boat cops" got him for bad behavior... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_rolleyes.gif
The guys at K&M quit selling Checkmate because they were all total A$$'S... I'm thinking they burned so many bridges that no one would buy from them, or checkmate quit selling to them! They are now under new ownership and selling Stingray and Keywest boats, one of the last "west side" marina's around.
Byrd Marine is gone... bull dozed and now a strip mall or Walgreens type thing.
Boatland is gone as well (telegraph & warren)
All the boat places are now west of us (brighton area) or north of us (waterford)... Makes boat-part hunting a 50+ mile round trip drive.... Yuck!
