pg Thanks for posting my pics I'm secound owner of this Trimate 2 and my plans to totally restore the floor next year, this summer there is a 200hp 2.4 Black Max going on it and a 6" set back hydrolic jack plate on it with a exaust manifold on it, spindle mount 24 pitch chopper prop, custom stereo and I fixed the wood in the bottom of the factory seats and remounted the buckets, when I re-do the floor I want to send the top to checkmate to have the top re-done like it is. I love this site thanks again Reed

I thought so. Love those old Mates! Of course the interior needs to be done and the floor is giving. Sounds like a winter project that needs to be done in time.

I just wanted you to know that I took the vinyl off the bucket seats and carefully trimmed the bad wood out and cut a piece to match and re-glassed it in so they should last a while longer. I'm re-doing my floor this winter, I did a repair to the floor under the back seat for this season. I do have a question for the *Checkmate Gods * I found when I pulled the bad wood out of the floor that it's full is( sprayed in foam ) there are no drain tunnels or tubes run for moisture or condensation , can the Gods explain this design please??? Thanks from a devoted wannabe http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/jpshakehead.gif Found the same thing under my floor Reed. Saturated foam and rotted stringer and no way for water to excape. No foam under my floor now and talk about drain holes! I put drain holes all over the place. I even have drain holes in my seat boxes. Keep up the good work!!

I am sure I will run into these problems. If you have some pics of your interior can you send them to me? How about your floor? Any pics you have would be great for my project. I rebuilt the driver seat and passeneger seat but used the old vinyl a few years ago. Now the boat needs to be stripped and totally redone. Just don't have the time right now. I will get to it when I can.

I have a really cool Idea for a little extreme boat, last summer I saw a real nice trimate with the 4 cylinder I/O in it, ( a light bulb came on in my speed feark head ) I have a real nice 327 chevy motor that would really make that lil- trimate fly. ( enternally balance it and instant speed ) http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/devil.gif

( Whew ) Shane and I got his motor on, I need to start weight training again I could only pick up the 2.4 for for about 5 min at a time lol I used to be able to bear hug one for 15-20 min. I gotta hit the weights and get buff again these arms used to be 23 inches. ( getting out of shape is a B.... ) but after an hour of doing some fine tuneing adjustments Shanes motor is mounted and ready for the lake, he'll be the first of our crew on the lake this year

I need to due my Interior and Floor this Winter !!!!!!!

My new Avatar pic is about the newest I have . I had a set back in 2007 ( fell in love and sold all to move and it fell threw....... but I have my tools and toys yet, I have a rented a place with a garage now I can get back at it. in the summer of 2006 I took my Trimate II out for a test of the new power head and it had enough torque to spin the hub in a used 24 pitch chopper prop and when it did it went to 8,900 RPM and as I planed off I lost a cylinder and when I turned to go back to the dock I lost a 2nd cylinder. ( 2 head bolts backed out all the way ** note to all on the 2.4 power heads 1978-1979 are the only 2 yrs you can re-use the head bolts ** Newer ones Stretch!!!** I do have some pics I'll have to see which I have put on here and learn how to add new ones. ~smiles~ I owe a lot to Gus, Chris, and Coop for getting my creative mind going again * Thanks Guys *

This pic shows my pumps for trim / jack plate, and filter/ fuel pump--- it's located on the right side of the fuel tank since the Trimate has limited space the battery is on the left side and I build a one of a kind wiring harness, that has 2 fuse blocks. I did that for all the gismows and the stereo

plus I took ( Bad Advice ) , a friend I won't name names to embrace him, told me I should put a 70 lb sand bag in the nose of the boat as a ballast weight. What a joke I told them it was a bad idea yeah I said them. I couldn't get ( any bow lift , or speed ) that's the last time I will take advice like that lol. They thought I couldn't handle a fast boat ~ scratches chin ~ ( I had a 14ft 1968 G.W. Invader that 2 guys my size could pick up the boat without the motor, I had a 1976 115 merc on it and it would run 68 - 70 on Radar in 1987 lol ) The Invader would run out on the lower unit in the water at FULL THROTTLE ~winks~ I was a speed freak at 20 lol, now I'm 42 and just a little more touched as a adrenaline junky.

Gus I just had a News Flash my buddy Jeremy's dad had a Trimate II with a In-line 6 cyl Merc 150 with a 24 pitch chopper and he had it mounted to the transom and it would ride the bullet with the whole boat out of the water and the best he did on the factory speedo was 70mph, maybe the 70 / wall is in the hull design ??

( I have a need for speed ) I just finished repacking the wheel bearings and putting on the new rims and tires on the trailer. ( Battery is on the charger as we speak lol, I can't wait lol it's been since 2006 since I have had her on the water ) ( Shouts-- Guss hey bro need a hand over there, if I had vacation time left I'd come give you a hand ) I can't wait to get to a checkmate event and meet everyone. ;) hey everyone... I had a great test spin on the lake today, I had double oil mixed in my motor for breaking it in. I couldn't wined her up fresh motor and all ( I ran out of prop-- it was at 7,000 rpm with a 26 pitch clever prop, I got 52.6 on GPS, the lake was way to ruff to trim her out. ) I had a blast only on the lake for 3 hours but I recharged my batteries and I'm good for a minute lol :)

If you can't get your idle down some you may want to disrupt your nuetral safety switch before you break some teeth. How many Rpm's do you figure this motors gonna spin? 53 at 7000 is over 40% slippage. R you sure that tach is reading right?

Reed
09-02-2008, 02:36 PM
the tach is reading right, it was fouling cause I had double oil in it that is the only reason I had idle set high set it down a little later in the day it should be good the next time I'll set it down more, I have enough compression that the new 675 cold cranking amp battery barley kept up. ( you could feal the slippage, the prop is a brand new cleaver that is a 26 pitch I think I need a 28 )

If your running that much compression i hope your running better than premium. Your 26 should still be pulling better numbers that what your getting even with a bad setup.

I ran 92 octane this time but I'm going to be buying a 5 gal can of Klotz 113 or 118 after the 10 hr break in time. ( I will take any good advice any want to share on what I should look for to fix my lil glitches in my set-up ) Thanks for the advice ;)

I have a local ( Hot Boat shop that said I can try some props that he has to find out what I need ) Guss, how many Rpm's are you turning with the 27 pitch Laser 2 ??? I will take my camera and get some fly by shots and pics of the set-up on the back of the boat. This Saturday I will take it to one of the resevors to work with it ( less boat traffic ). ;)

Guss do you do vinyl lettering?? I want to do a checkmate decal like on the side of mine except the silver and black it would be Yellow with a black and red out line ( what do you think ?? ) there is a local shop that I can get them to do it but I figured I'd ask you first.

Grrrrr I found out the guy that sold me the Clever Lied it was only a 24 and I was 53 mph at 8-9000 rpm.... I just tried a 26 pitch prop like a chopper I got 60 mph at 7900-8000 rpm and yes the tach is right on checked it with a timing light with a built in tach I need to lower my motor location on the jack-plate I'm not getting enough ( lift )- it chine walked a lil at the 60 mark but since the motor is too high it didn't dance hard it was subtle at best the guy that let me try the prop has 26 to 30 pitch in the chopper style he has a " Hot Boat Shop and he runs a SVT tunnel, he said I could try each one till I got the speed and the Rpm's at the range I wanted so.............. next Saturday I'll try a 28 ;)

Both Cleavers and Choppers are designed to be surfaced, i would leave your motor where it's at and try a big chopper it'll suck outta the hole but should net you decent numbers if you can spin it.

I have not run the 27p yet. I was turning the 25p laser into the 6800-7400 range. I needed to move the motor up but I was at the limit of the rack plate that used to be on it. So I was running a bit deep. Can't help you with the letters. I got luck and found mine an ebay a few years back.

Guss ;I have my motor set on the bottom adjusting holes on the holes that are on the Merc pivot section I think there are 6 that sets my bob's nose cone tip about 4 in below the point/center of the transom.. Thant is with the jackplate all the way down and not adjusted up any at all.
I don't have time tonight but I have some more pics to put on photo bucket to share with everyone, I hope my testing and posting of the props will help any and all with setting up their motors. ( I like to help any way I can ) ;)

Hey Bizz before I change the setup on the motor and jack plate I'll lower the motor all the way down and take a pic and post it with how it sets, I think when it is in the water running there is about 2 in of the blade out of the water.. but to make sure I do it right I'll post the pics so ( that all that know more than me on ( setup ) can coach me. My old setup was running about 2" below the "V". This was as high as I could get the plate. It will be interesting to see if you can get the chopper to run. I never had any luck with them. My boat would get real loose in the rear near 70. Not chine walk, just king of a butt move/wiggle. Only did it with the chopper and I was never able to drive out of it.

On my predictor i ran a 30P hoss .5" above the pad.

if i were you i would set the center of your cone 1" below the V and run that 28P.

Guss I will try your setup 1st I have a 27 pitch chopper style spindle mount to try this weekend and I will try illmatics setup idea the next weekend since saturdays are the only day I have to test and play.
Guss I got the loose-wiggle at 55 and hammered into it got 60 and it smoothed out ,when I let out of the throttle it got ( dangerous-loose ) had to hammer into it for a sec and back out again. I'm thinking stabelizer trim plates will be added soon. I like to fly but that loose *@#t!!! is worse than chine walking ( I have no fear/ but lots of respect ) and that put a lil fear in me.

the "loose" feeling is you starting to go fast. you will have to get used to it if you are to break 70. just take it easy and run it up a couple mph at a time.

loose = launch?? I have had a fast boat before a 14ft GW Invader that dry weight was 250-300 lbs and I had a 115 Merc on it it didn't get loose it just took off like a rocket. I was riding on the lower unit with that one it was totally different ;)

The loose feeling you get when you approach 60 is the boat breaking free from the water. all boats have a certain speed they feel loose at. you just have to learn how to drive through it and continue on. try to avoid backing out to fast over 60 MPH.

it sounds like you have all the power you need to go fast we just need to get on the right path with more seat time.

the spinning you may be having upon take off is normal with a chopper prop. you have to hammer it and then feather the throttle back a bit until it sound like its about to catch and then hammer it again.

if you are going to run an over the hub prop, may I reccomend the HOSS Triton? try a 28-30P. you wont be sorry.

Hey everyone, I got to the lake-reservoir today. I wasn't to happy we had tornado watch white caps on the water so we got a short time to test. I dropped only 500 rpm and gained 6 mph so I got 66 with the 27-- at 7000-7500rpm. the wind was making the boat dance way too wrong!!! It was lifting but not in a good way, so next sat I'm gonna try a 28-29 pitch.

Hey everybody I will post the pics next week from my tests.... I have great news and bad news

the great news it I bought a house, so I have a 728sqft garage to tinker in again ( yahoo! )

Bad news is , I had to play games all week with the realitor and didn't get the prop I borrowed back to the guy I borrowed it from till this morning. ( guess he expected it back monday ) so not meaning to I guess I burnt the bridge for the ( prop -tests ) Dam I didn't mean to piss him off... oh well........ Now I guess I'll just have to buy a few off eBay and try them that way. More testing on the way before the ice gets on the water ;)
