I have a chance to buy the molds for a 16' Sidwinder. 3 molds hull and 2 decks ob and i/o. And one boat. They are close to where I live and the owner is moving out of state and needs to sell. I have never herd of these boats and now I see Ricks Marine has a used one for sale they look like something smack out the 70's. Anyone know if they were any good or how popular they were. And where were they made originally?

well the first boat i ever owned was a side winder. you can see it in the link in my signature. they made many styles of boats. they hade jet boats, lil 15 foot speed boats, boats that looked just like the old glastron in the james bond movie. there were all kinds. you are right, they were mostly from the early 70's. here are some pics of the style sidewinder i like.

Thanks Matt. I've been over at scream and fly searching for stuff about it. I may be making the guy an offer this week. Getting new windshields may be some fun. If I get them that will make about 6 different boats I'm messing with.

sweet those are slick looking boats. i think it would be cool as hell to make one from scratch. alot of work but cool. ill bet you could fab a windsheild. i wonder how much it would cost you to put one of those boats together. all the glass and resin, wood, and then gell. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_confused.gif well good luck on the purchase.

Actually its in this order gel, glass, resin, and wood. Still trying to come to a price with guy then I would have to get all the separate pieces down to Bucyrus. It might be a hole weekend just moving the parts down here. As for as the windshield I can make a fiberglass sheild like is so popular these days. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Those boats looked great, but many were ill handleing. A guy on our lake flipped one right out in front of our cottage.

I've had two of them, cool looking boats made by Thompson. One was an 18' with 4cyl evinrude, we used it fire scuba diving out of, it looked good but was slow. The second was my brothers( still sits out behind my barn) Its a 16' and had a 200 Merc on it, put enough power to em and anything will go fast.
The transomes wernt very strong the way they tapered forward, and the 16' had a terrible hook on the bottom, but they look cool.

see thompson made a boat that looked similar to this sidewinder, so did glastron. sidewinder also made a jetboat with the same hull design as this one.

I read up on the ill hanleing part. My offer for these molds is really low. 1/3rd of asking price I will not care one way or another whether he accepts or not. I'd like to add it to my future lineup. But I'm also looking at a couple of diferent molds. That are higher up my wish list. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Thanks for the great responses.

Found out that Thomson made the Sidewinder. They also had several handling problems. Thanks for the info everyone. I've decided to pass on the purchase. There are too many other nicer molds on the market to mess with this one. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif
