View Full Version : Checkmates on the Chesapeake Bay?

Hi to all, I'm looking to meet up with some Chesapeake Bay or Bay area river boaters, and/or even arrange a small "Checkmate preferred but not necessary" gathering/regatta in the Bay area. If anyone is near by and is interested let me know.
I hate boating alone and was hoping to get together on a regular basis out on the Bay, so if you in the area and boat on the Bay please let me know. I'm kind of new to the Bay and rivers around the bay (my old boat was a bit small for the Bay) so please forward some suggestions, thanks in advance,

I guess no one boats on the Chesapeake Bay. I guess I'll just have to have all the fun by myself or with the Baja and Gayliner owners :-(

hey guys, just recently saw your post, I'm on the pax river running from jug bay all the way to solomons almost every weekend. My boat doesn't like big water so I tend to stay out of the bay, but looking for a zt240 as I type. your welcome to come down so we can meet up. The upper river is like glass most of the time but down near solomons it can get kind of rough. I've only seen 2 other mates out there but I'm sure there has to be more. Donconvinsor puts in at jug bay but haven't come across him yet. Let me know and maybe we can meet up one of these weekends. kyle

WOW! Someone responded http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/bounce.gif
Where exactly is jug bay on the pax river? I do more boating on the upper bay area, but I plan to do more day and overnight trips to different bay rivers this season still. We should meet up sometime.

pax is short for the patuxent river. jug bay is about 22 miles north of solomons island on the river. And right around solomon's are alot of hotels and bars. I have two small ones too, one 3 and the other 10. from solomons you can get to almost everywhere, from point lookout to cobb island and colonial beach, on the VA side. the potomac, patuxent, and the bay all meet pretty much right in the same area. lot of boats. It's pretty fun just watching all the big boats race up and down the river. the one that i see alot of is this guy that runs a 502 big block pontoon boat. I wouldn't mind checking out different parts of the bay myself, how is it up there? we should definitely meet up. kyle

gmiller699,
We made it to Hart-Miller Island a couple of weeks ago. Beautiful day, but the wind kicked up and we couldn't cross over to the Fairlee Creek to have some fun at Jellyfish Joels http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif
The rough water freeked out my wife and she is not into heading to the bay at this point. I need t0 find a good day and a nice ramp near a "C Bay" river with dockup bars/resturants/beaches and really WOW her on the Bay soon or my Bay days are never going to happen untill I get a bigger boat.
We've been heading down to the Rehoboth Bay/Indian River for the last few weekends and are headed there again this weekend. I plan to hang out at the "Rock The Bay" event in Northeast, but without my boat unless the weather looks awesome enough that I can put in after all the big boats start the Poker Run. I hope to get a day or two in on the Bay in Sept and Oct before winterizing, so I'll let you know.
Any suggestions?

Hey all, I boat in the middle bay. Have a place at Smith Point on the Little Wicomico River. Plenty of room to overnight at my pier for any of you that come this way. Anyone in the area is welcome to tie up. Also have a ramp at my house for trailer boaters...if you don't have a cabin....bring a tent! We have an awesome beach at the mouth of the river and spend most of the weekend there.
There was a thread last year about getting together at Solomon's this summer. Just been too busy to pursue it. Might be nice when it drops below 95 degrees!! An early fall rendvous????

I've heard of Cobb Island but not sure where it is. Smith Point is at the mouth of the Potomac (southern toip) where it meets the Bay. I'm on the Little Wicomico and there is also the Great Wicomico 5-10 miles south.
When you come out of our river and go left you are in MD waters, straight or south in VA....

Kyle,
That's right across from me. on a clear day we can see Point Lookout from Smith Point. Easy ride if it's calm. It can get pretty rough in that part of the bay. We'll be down Thursday night through Labor Day. Let's hook up and drink a cold one....
Just got back a little while ago. Really calm this weekend and we drifted and swarm for a couple hours today. Woody

Hey Chesapeake "Bay Watch" guys.... http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/lol.gif
Do some chatting about a fall get together, I want to meet up with at least the 2 of you and hopefully we can get the rest of the NJ, MD, DE, PA folks to join in. I am headed for Lake Raystown in PA over Labor Day otherwise I'd be there as well. Post your thoughs here and lets see if we can get a second date set up. I'll come to Solomons, never been so good reason to head down there. There's always the Power Boat races weekend in Cambridge, MD. Not sure if we can watch from our boats or not. Just a first idea, open for more sugestions.

Here's an update on a few items:
CAMBRIDGE RACES
The 2005 Cambridge Race event is set for Sunday, September 25th. As most of you
already know, spectators can view the entire course from the Hyatt Marina dock,
or the old Route 50 bridge. Vantage points are so close, we usually only see
about 2 dozen spectator boats. Come on down early and grab a spot on the dock
or the bridge. If you're coming down by boat on Sunday, keep in mind the river
may be closed to all traffic as early as 10AM.

Good morning, everyone! Ravens are out of town on the 18th so Joe and I will definitely be out on the water that day. Let's meet up. Dobbins is out (you saw the story in the Gazette?) but maybe Fairlee Creek? Depending on weather and what Joe's thinking, we'd be happy to hang at Rock Creek again, too. I'd love to go to Cambridge for races, but we're headed to Dover that day for the race. I really like the idea of heading down to Solomon's area, but that's more of a weekend trip for us and with Joe working til 5pm on Saturday's that's a tough one. Chinaride is right, lower bay can get ugly so weather would play a big factor in that ride, too. JK

I ran to within 2-miles of Point Lookout yesterday. Real calm and only took about 15 min. You still heading down this weekend? We'll be on the beach at the mouth of the Little Wicomico most of the weekend. Lot's of friends and neighbors hanging out. Great place to swim and drink a cold one!! Send me an e-mail and I'll give you my number at the cottage. (Carneal@raynoradams.com)

Hey Kyle, Did you ever make it to Solomon's? The rest of the weekend it blew out of the NE. A no go for us, we'd been headed right into it. Oh well, beautiful weather otherwise. Just a little bumpy. http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/surf.gif

made it to solomon' for the air show, it was great they flew about 150 feet right over us! The kids loved it. But when we headed out to the bay over to your place it was way to rough for them, the little one got a little sea sick, so we decided to run back up the river and hang out. Thanxs for invite though, we'll try it again some other time. kyle

Chinaride,
I'm thinking about coming down to your river. Where is a good place to tow to if I am coming South from Bowie on Rt 3 & 301? I might also come down 202 from 495. How long a ride is it to Solomons on the water and is there any resturants/bars/fun places to stop/play/swim on the way down the river?
This may be this year but more likely next. Doing some planning now.

I guess it all depends on if you want to spend the night on the river or not. I usually put in at croom airport road. It can be a little tricky navigating the channels, but is a great ride down the river. You can also go down about 15 min. or so to another ramp, mays or magruder's landing I think, that is much nicer and deeper water ramp. it has picnic tables and stuff like that. If your coming down through bowie I think its just a little farther south and make a left on route 382 and I'd say it's about 10 mile from there. From may/ magruders landing it only about 20 miles down the river to solomon's. But once you get down there the river can get a little bumpy. there's only 2 gas stations from there to solomon's one at broomes island on the left of the river and bennidict right after the 231 bridge, but plenty down in solomon's. As far as places to swim there is a good beach called prison point on the left going about half way down to solomon's. Lots of people hang out there but don't really know who owns that property, never had any problems though. Let me know when you are coming down and we'll meet up. kyle
both of those ramps are owned by patuxent river state park if that helps. there are direction on http://mddnr.chesapeakebay.net/fish/Cntyramps/PG.html
hope this helps

as far as the races I don't want to be the only one in a boat !!!! but are we going to be able to see the race from our boat?
Mooneys
09-16-2005, 12:35 AM
Thanks chinaride, I'll look into the ramps. Maybe I can meet you early on a Sat and you can show me the way down the river channels if it's really tricky. I think if we come it will be an over nighter but a hotel over nighter since our boat doesn't have a cabin and the wife doesn't seem to like the idea of sleeping on the boat :-( I'd want to leave my trailer up river at the ramp over night and possibly find a hotel at Solomons to stay at, with a dock for the boat of course. Do you think that is possible? This may have to be for next year but I may take a drive down to Solomons and the ramps, without the boat, to check things out one day when I'm slow at work ;-)
I'll let you know when.

The Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association web site said that there is not alot of boats that show up to watch the race because you can see it so well from the Hyatt hotel and the old
route 50 bridge. I will be on the bridge during the race this year(I will were something with Checkmate on it).I want to check it out and maybe take the boat next year.(I sure miss the Baltimore race! i could here the boats from my house in pasadena.)
Here is some info from The Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association web site:
EVENT: Cambridge Offshore Racing Event
September 25th, 2005
The CBPBA and OPA are proud to present the annual Cambridge Offshore Power Boat Challenge event on September 25th. This is the Chesapeake Bay Power Boat Association's premier event, so mark it on your calendars.
Once again, the backdrop and HQ for the weekend will be the spectacular Chesapeake Hyatt Regency Marina and Resort on the Choptank River in Cambridge, Maryland. This is undoubtedly one of the top venues in the country for spectators since it provides a full view of the entire course for fans. Watch from the pier at the Hyatt, the old Route 50 bridge, or from your boat, there is no better place to watch an offshore race in the United States.
Join us on Sunday for the main event. Offshore Power Boats from the Offshore Performance Association (aka The Jersey Boyz) will take to the water, some reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour. This race will help determine who makes it to the World Championships this year. We expect racing to begin late morning. If you're coming down Sunday, please note the river will likely be closed to all traffic between 10AM and 3PM.
Racers and fans can make reservations for slips and hotel rooms directly with the Chesapeake Hyatt Marina and Resort at 410.901.1234 ask for Linda Wilson.
Slips can be reserved by calling the Hyatt: 410.901.6380 or 410.901.6319 booked online via http://www.marinalife.com (Hyatt Rivermarsh Marina).
Information and details about the Hyatt property can be found here: http://chesapeakebay.hyatt.com/property/index.jhtml

ive been there past 2 years at the boat races, and followed the

a motor in his boat, so me and my motor man (merc man) gave
him a ride back from the restaurant to get his vehicle, and my
little check had his knees knocking when we went under the 50
bridge and dropped him off on the floating dock. big boat, big money
is fun, but my little check lived up to its name again.

Ragingpatriot. Where in South Jersey are you coming from. I put in the Salem area, cruz the Delaware river sometimes up as far as Philly, and almost always go down the C & D canal. There is a popular hangout in Chesapeake City. Sometime in July I think they have a C & D canal day which I have not yet attended, but I hear they get hundreds of boats. Also, over the July 4th week end we will be on the Chester river in Maryland with another Checkmate. Possibly we'll see you around.

hey are there any upper Chesapeake boaters. The original post was from some Pa. boaters and I wonder where they put in at. There are plenty of good ramps for trailer boaters on the upper chesapeake. Probably the best ramp is at the elk neck state park on the elk river. it is 4 to 5 boats wide and real nice. There are ramps on the northeast river in the town of northeast. You can put in at perryville on the susquehanna or go across the bridge and put in at Havre de Grace. The boating is excellent from the Susquehanna river south as far as you want to venture. There are plenty of places to hang out with a lot of good people. a few are Lloyds Creek, Still Pond, James Creek, Fairlee creek, etc. If you are into water sports there are good areas with flat water protected from the wind on the Sassafras river, the bohemia river above the bridge, between the islands on the susquehanna and many more. If anyone wants to get together to set up a weekend get together get back to me. I believe it would be fun to get a bunch of Checkmates together.
