I am in need of some expert advice from seasoned Checkmate owners. I just purchased a pulsare 1850 w/ Merc 175 from Roberts Marine, this weekend I splashed the hull, three times to be exact. Each time I launched the boat, both on launch and pickup, I have been approached by onlookers questioning me on the beauty and lines of my new hull. A quarter of my boating time is now spent discussing Checkmate's history and wiping the dreul left behind from my new hull. How do you politely cut these conversations short? Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the vote of approval and enjoy seeing boat envy on other's faces.

Yep! I have the same trouble. Then they hear mine start up with that open exhaust. That tends to be another whole topic for discussion. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/thumb.gif

HA! The only cure is to float out from the landing and let everyone on the lake come to you and talk about your boat. Think of the gas you'll be saving! I got that all the time with my Pulsare. Hope I get that again when I buy a 2000 with a DFI 250 horse motor when my daughter gets out of college.............

AS FAR AS PEOPLE ASKING YOU QUESTIONS; JUST ASK THEM FOR A COLD BEER AND ENJOY THE WELL SPENT TIME!!! http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/beer1.gif YOU JUST MIGHT CONVERT ANOTHER BOAT OWNER TO A CHECKMATE! http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

It is amazing how many people down here (south} thought Checkmate was out of business. Everyone says how they used to love the Checkmate boats when they were a kid but hadn't seen any lately. I have to agree, there are no Checks around here, makes mine that much more special. Seems like most of the boats are up north. Mine might be the only hull to be used 12 months a year, sorry.
Thanks for the warm welcome, I'm sure I'll have more questions in the future.

I'm from New Orleans La. I race a J30 (sailboat) on Lake Pontchartrain, a road bike for Team Bovine Paceline and am getting back into powerboats after a long layoff of 25 years. Used to have a 15ft tri-hull (Manatee) with a Johnson 140, we would ski all day in the summer. Always admired those little metalflake Checkmates running the bayou, now I own one, less the metalflakes.

Haha JWH I get the same treatment in Muskoka.
Actually I will share a story with you, but promise to make it as short and sweet as possible.
Several summers ago, when I was about 16 and 17 I worked at a Muskoka Marina on lake Rosseau. Because it was quicker for me to boat to work than drive, I often did the former on sunny days. I worked simply as a gas man, or a gas transfer technician as I liked to refer to myself!!
Anyways, several times, with my boat parked at the used boat dock just off the main gas dock, people would always start asking me and the owner of the Marina if that "Black Checkmate" was for sale. Of course it was not. But it was happening so much, and people were hovering around that boat more than the boats the marina was trying to sell, that I ended up not bringing my boat to work any longer (I drove instead). The marina I worked at was not a Checkmate dealer! And the boat was already a few years old then, it is now about 9 years old and people wtill stare at it when I am going through the locks, through the Indian River, through Port Sandfield, etc!!!
People all the time ask me if it is for sale, how fast it goes, or to compliment its appearance. Maybe cuz it is one of the few black boats on the lake.
Welcome to the club and enjoy it!

cool...J30's are a lot of fun. I raced Hobie 17's for years. About the most fun you can have without a motor!
Boat safely....at least when the lake cops are about!
