How big can I go, I'm putting out 335 horse now with my 460 King Cobra. What will my hull handle? How much more horsepower will thru hull and an aluminum intake give me?

Hey Tim,
The Vision is a great boat.I think the hull will handle just about anything you'll throw at it. The question is the OMC outdrive. Not sure how tough they are. Thru-hull exhaust and aluminum intake would certainly help the engine breath.(And sound cool)Doing that and finding the right prop can bring you up a couple mph.

While adding an aluminum intake and open exhaust will help, you will not see the full benefits unless you make the entire package match. By this, I mean cam, cylinder heads, carb. and exhaust manifolds. Simply increasing the capabilities of the intake and exhaust flow, will not make for optimum performance unless that increased flow can go through the heads and manifolds. As Eric said, I too am not sure of the maximum power that a King Cobra drive can take.

A cheap hop-up (cam, intake, maybe carb depending on what you already have?) may gain you 25-50HP. As with any and all boat power builds, the restirction is in the exhaust department!!! For under $500, you may gain a few miles per hour, but need better exhaust to get you any more horses.
You will drop big bucks to get to the next level ($3000-4000 complete). That motor with a upper end kit...aluminum heads, cam, intake, 850 carb,(and headers!) can make 450+HP on a stock lower end as long as you keep the RPM under 5500...but you need headers too...
Problem with the Ford build-up is exhaust...very limited in choices..try calling Lightning Headers (I think the Ford ones are now available for under $2000)...big bucks, but the engine won't run without them. Also, some of the aftermarket Ford 460 aluminum heads also offer a "cross-breed" with the exhaust side having the common "Chevy" port spacing and bolt pattern so you can buy any big block Chevy header and bolt them up...
As others stated, the "King Cobra" is your weakest link but will live if your tender with it. Those drives tend to explode if you wave-jump and go heavy form load to no-load shocks. Big power doesn't seam to hurt them as long as the prop stays in the water.
If you really want to get into the speed game, save your money, sell what you have, and get into another boat set-up with a Merc Bravo and Chevy Big-Block power. By the time you invest $$$$ and time to gain only a few MPH, you could move into something newer, faster, and better performance buildable!!! Just my 2-cents worth...Jim. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/Eyecrazy.gif
Hey guys, gotta disagree with you on the durability of the king cobra. Compared with stock mercs, these things are bullet proof. The only time you'll run into problems with wave jumping is if the linkage is not properly adjusted.

I had a 460 king cobra in a 4-winns 211 lib. It already had the through hull exhaust. I changed the intake with a edelbrock performer, the hole shot and the mid range punch was much better. I was never beat by another 211 lib running a merc. 454. My biggest complaint was the shifting of the unit. I had it adjusted many times but it was never very good.
On my boat more than anything else it was the right prop that made the difference. If you are running the omc sst ( the black one) through it away, it isn't good for anything. I gained 8 mph by going to a turbo.
