Hi!

I will mount two Merc 2.5 SS engines (260 hp upgrade to 350 hp by Michael Werner in Germany) on my Phantom 25. I can choose between old style cowlings (square like) or new style alien cowlings.

With the new style cowlings the engines has to be mounted 23 inches centerline to centerline. This is equivalent to two UK Phantoms running twins (one Phantom 25 w/2xMerc 2.5 SS and one Phantom 23 w/2xMerc 2.5 SS).

With the old style square cowlings the engines can be mounted approx. 20 inches centerline to centerline.

The Phantom 25 is relative narrow, and the beam is approx. 170 centimeters.

What is the antvantage or disantvantage of mounting the engines 20 inches vs 23 inches?

Cheeers and thanks!

hi toffen, you can a ctually mount the old square cowl mercs on 18.5 inch centers. the advantage to a closer set of moter centers is more top end speed. also if you are running in the rough stuff, especially racing, your props will leave the water slightly later and enter slightly earlier the closer togehter they are. that is because of the vee bottom, the closer together the motors are, the lower they mount. however, at slow speed docking and at the boatramp it becomes more difficult to handle. like when you shift one in reverse to spin around. you loose leverage from the props being so close. hope this helps. regards , scott
