OK, guys. I'm getting desperate. I've been trying to figure out what's wrong with my Mercury outboard for a couple of weeks now and not made any progress. I've been using the SELOC manual but am really not experienced with motors so am beginning to think that I'm probably missing something obvious.

So.... do any of you know of anyone in the central New York area who makes slip calls? The boat is in Ithaca on Cayuga Lake. My local Merc repair shop has a four month wait.

In my perfect universe I would have a buddy who knows about 2 strokes who could help me out in return for some woodturning lessons. Woodturning I understand. Wood is good. Boats are good. Outboards are beginning to really tick me off!

Any advice is very welcome. Thanks.

Did you get a chance to do a compression check?

Yup, checked the compression. Cyls 1 - 6 are 126 124 130 126 130 128.

I've only got spark on #6 wire and I double checked that with an inductor style timing light. I guess I'll have to troubleshoot the ignition system. Never done that before but I've got the SELOC manual.

I've also noticed that the enrichener valve is only connected at one inlet..coming from the top carb. I have no idea where the other line is or where it's supposed to be connected. That's the next thing to solve I guess.

Diane:

Have i got a deal for you. If you want to pay the courier charges, i'll print off the electonic parts catolog images for your engine (with matching part numbers). I MUST have your engine model and serial number. If new enough, you should get some clean pictures. email me at partsatprolinemuskoka.com (substitue "@" for "at" I get enough email from spammers as it is)

Hi Diane, another thing to check is the Stator, not real familiar with that year of engine, however, on my old Mercury Sport Jet, I had similar symptoms and it turned out to be the Stator. The Stator for the lack of a better explaination is basicaly a coil but it is an important piece of the pie when it comes to the ignition system. Since you had mentioned you only had a spark on one wire it sounds ignition related. Most of the manuals provide a method to eliminate specific items, have a look and you'll probably find a section on the Stator or coil, a meter is probably the only thing you'll need.

Keep us posted, just think how much your learning about your engine, I know I know, its not much fun right now is it, but I can assure you we've all been there.

WOODTURNING LESSONS????? SOUNDS LIKE A STATOR GONE BAD AND/OR POWER PAK. ROUGHLY A $300-$400 REPAIR AND RELATIVELY EASY.

I've heard of boating. Once in a story told by an old buddy. Something about how you get your boat started and move it away from the dock and set out for other places. That would be nice. Maybe I'll try it sometime!

Thanks for the encouragement guys. Just bought a multi-tester and as soon as it clears up I'll go test the ignition system. After that, who knows. Maybe even boating!

best thing you can do for a merc is tie a rope to it and use it for an anchor. Then if you want a real motor, that will run, go buy an evinrude or johnson. http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/devil.gif
