What type of steering do they use on older checkmates. It looks like there is a rack connected to the back end of the steering wheel with the cable extending out the end of it.I see websites that show telflex steering but they say rotary steering.and the picture looks nothing like whay I have.Is there any way to lubricate this cable and if not how do you get it out of the boat to replace it.Any info you can give me would be appreciated.Thanks.

Yes the older mates used the single rack system. If your is hard to steer its the cable that is starting to go south. The old grease gets real hard making it hard to steer. The rack comes out fairly easy. The cable assy. is held on by a 2 bolt clamp. Remove this first. Becarefull of the cable it will want to streighten out. Pull the center cap off the wheel, remove the 4 bolts holding the wheel on. Then remove the 2 bolts I think that run through the consol holding the rack and the hub together. After all of this you will hopefully have the hole assy. sitting in your hand. The rotory system works very well. I just upgraded form a single cable to a duel cable system. The hardest part of this project is getting the mounting hardware for mounting the 2nd cable to the motor. Good luck

I ended up replacing the steering cable and also had to replace the tilt tube because the inside of the tilt tube was pitted and coulnd not remove the steering cable without hacksawing the cable on both sides of the motor.I then had to buy a lift ring to so I could lift the motor off the boat to replace the tilt tube and steering cable.I could barely turn the wheel before and now its free as can be.I also had to purchase a new steering wheel as the new steering assembly needed a keyed wheel and the original was bolted.Total cost about $200.00 for everything
