Yes that time again to remove and clean off a season of funk form the bottom of the boat. However this year I had a surprize. It seems that the hull and transom on my 88 Enchanter has broken out with a case of boat pox. Has anyone else come across this and if so what is the plan of attack.

You have blisters.Sail boaters run into that problem all the time.
The proper way to fix is grind it down to the fiberglass dry it out and then re-gel. Lots of work.

My 1995 Persuader had blisters from the original owner keeping it in the water. The red color was also slightly faded where it sat under water. The good news was mine didn't get any worse, as I kept it high and dry.

It is called osmosis it happens to many boats left in the water. The only way to prevent it is to pull your boat out when it will be sitting for days or put it on a lift. That is why I am buying a lift for mine in Spring.

Here is a link that explains it well

Very interesting article Tcat. Thanks for posting it. I never realized a fiberglass boat could be damaged from sitting in the water.

The previous owner of my boat left it in the water, and my boat has some blisters as well.

Define irony: Something designed to be in water shouldn't be left in water http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/brickwall.gif

Thanks for the advice. next question does anyone know of a good shop in southeast michigan to repair the blisters on the bottom of the boat. Or is it cheaper to scrap the hull and order a new one?

I wonder what effect osmosis blisters have on the performance of a boat. I wonder if the roughness could improve top end speed?

Well look at my speedometer, I think the outcome of the blisters is negative. I have lost about 4-6 mph in the last year. Or maybe my speedometer is going bad at thh same time as the rest of the boat.
