Matt:

Call Randy Pierson @ GPI, he builds motors for people all over the country.
He also normally has some used ones in stock.
Give him a try 320-356-9068 or 320-267-0440.

I got my motor from him and it runs great! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif

I might sell a 1978 150hp V-6 Merc. It needs a water pump, and needs de-carbed. One cylinder is about 9-10 lbs lower than the rest. One latch on clamshell cowl is missing and hooks on cowl are broken off at the mounting point. If your interested, I'll supply links to S&F threads showing pics and discussions of this motor. I know it runs, can supply pics showing it running in driveway. Have never ran it other than in driveway. $1250.00 plus shipping, or reasonable milage to meet somewhere.

Just as information if you are still looking for a motor and need a bit less weight. The 150 above is a 2.0L

illMATTic

isnt that kind of high for an older motor on its way out? that one cylinder could be trouble in the future.

Heck for that price you could buy the motor, take the powerhead off, sell it.
Then bolt on a newer powerhead and go. There are lots of complet power heads for sale.

jrumon
12-30-2004, 09:05 PM
FOR THAT PRICE... YOU CAN TRY IT TO SEE HOW THE 175hp WORKS OUT AND SELL IT FOR MORE WHEN DONE!

AND... we could all gather around the BAJA bonfire and tell CHECKMATE stories!!!! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/lol.gif

we got 2.4 200's from the 1980's that
blow new ones away. my friend even looks
like a mercury. ever heard of mercman?
his hand built powerheads are unlike any.
they sound like no other, and run like
no other. bet you cant blow one up.if you
do, hes got a warranty that just started.
why spend all that money and get beat by
a piece of junk. i didn't, and im leaving
225 opti's and v8 evinrudes in the spray,
and i have more fun than you could ever
imagine. this guy is the einstein of merc
old school. bring your 21 footer and im
going to go faster than you, and im going
beat you with a 200, or the other 200, or
the next 200, etc.

i said that thing was an 86? just a thought, check all the oil injection lines on that engine. at that age they may be brittle and on the verge of breaking - hate to ruin your maiden voyage. my next door neighbor at the cottage had an oil line break and take out #5 cylinder $5000. later he was boating again. I'm pretty sure his engine was the same year - not that that matters any.

illMATTic
02-08-2005, 11:03 PM
i plan to remove the oil injection. i have been told it is not as accurate at higher rpms.

illMATTic...

Glad you found a motor...

YES...remove the oil injection! The correct Merc kit is available from ANY merc dealer (i think it's Merc part #43453) or at www.rickracers.com (http://www.rickracers.com) for about $10.

Be sure the carbs are drained and you get a good mixture of 40:1 in the system...and run Premium Synthetic 2-stroke oil.

Lastly, I would change to fresh set of thermostats to be safe as well as a new waterpump impeller.

Sounds like a good find! Jim.

02-09-2005, 02:39 PM
I thought that the oil injection systems were good if you dont plan on running over 6500 rpm
the chances of forgetting to mix it or mixing it incorrectly are greater than pump failure, maybe that is only true of the newer mercs. http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/irked.gif

jrumon

The OLDER the oil injection system... The more likely that something will go WRONG!!! Why take any chances!!! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/brickwall.gif

Plus, the HARDER and LONGER you run them, the less effective the oil injection system is! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/jpshakehead.gif

Oil injection systems ARE:
>fairly dependable up to 6000rpm...
>convienent not to have to mix gas & oil ratio...
>they lean the system out at idle (for trolling?)... the last time I checked in the CHECKMATE owners manual... Trolling or Fishing Rods are strickly PROHIBITED in ALL CHECKMATES by penality of downgrading you to a Bayliner!!! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/lol.gif

In a stock use and application, they're fine... in a high performance application (high rpm & load)... not the best choice! Jim.

YEA... ME TOO! We need a Michigan "FUN RUN"... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Seems like the Bay City HOOTERS would be a good CHECKMATE meeting place! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif Big parking lot for a impromto boat show, the public boat launch just a 1/4 mile up the Big Saginaw River, and we could take some passes up the river or down into Saginaw Bay of Lake Huron if calm enough! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Plus, it's EASY ACCESS from anywhere in the state... only a few miles off I-75 in the eastern middle of the state... Hmmmm... Sounds like I'll have to work on this some more come spring???? http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_cool.gif Jim.

yeah im down. i would just zip down river from saginaw. there wouldnt be any passes out to the bay though. its all no wake from hooters on out. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/images/webspace/Graemlins/sleep.gifthat is where bay marina is along with countless launch sites. you could put in there in bay city and motor about a mile up river. then it is hammer down all the way to saginaw. the hooters here in saginaw has many slips to go around. plus they are right below where you sit. you can eat, drink, and look at your boat while doing it. there is deffinitly much to see on the saginaw river in bay city. it should be fun.
