I can't wait. :)
If I need a transom/floor/core/'glass/etc. I'm sending it down to Coops garage!

Not just a transom replacement, but a partial floor replacement, and a partial stringer replacement. Its getting there, I'm a day behind on this this weekend, I was working on my catamaran instead. Once the transom is replaced we are going to replace the OMC Cobra with a Berkley jet drive. So this will also turn into a Stearn drive to Jet drive conversion.
Here are some more pics.

The plywood under this section of the floor felt a lot like peat moss. I might have to replace about 2ft of the stringer next to it.

Coop's Garage is getting kind of full. I might be pulling the Trimate II out for a while. Need to make room for another boat.

Yahoo, I finally found where a tool I needed to get the rest of this transom out walked off to. As soon as I figured out where it went, I walked it back home where it belongs. I may have to order a couple of spares. :irked:

hey coop I have looked at quite a few of your threads and it looks like your doing a great job. I am in the process of replacing two transoms, one on a 72 mx16 and one on a 73 mx16. I'm just curious what kind of plywood you prefer and what kind of resin has worked best for you. Thank you for your time. heres a few pics of the old girls http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/willyscj63/album?.dir=80aere2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//photos.yahoo.com/ph//my_photos

Polyester resin, and any good straight sheet of plywood that is NOT treated for weather. I try to find plywood that has one or both sides sanded. The glue they use to make it is very good. Resin does not stick very well to treated wood.
Psst. Here is something I learned on the road, after picking up loads at plywood factorys. There is VERY LITTLE difference in regular plywood and marine plywood. At least not enough to justify the cost, cause if you don't seal it, it will rot just as fast.

The biggest diff between the two is that marine have very little or no voids at all in the laminates and ext can have voids up 3-4 inches long+weak spot..

Coop............completing this work and showing us how to close and finish transom will be most interesting. I would be interested to see if you intend to put extra reinforcement (from the trans to the stringers or hull bottom) in for extra horsepower. More HP options could be a nice enhancement.

It all depends on what the owner wants done with the transom. We had originally planned to replace the OMC Cobra drive with a Berkley jet. But now he is having second thoughts about that, due to the costs of replacing controls and cables. So regardless of what he decides we will be extending the transom above the joint between the deck and the hull. This way if he decides on remounting the OMC then there will be considerably more transom above the outdrive than the original inch or so that was there to start with. This was a serious weak spot in that transom.

Looking good Coop.
Up here in the great white north...
Fir G1S (good one side) plywood uses marine glue.
So that's what I use for my exterior and marine projects.
What you'll get is a sheet of plywood that has a smooth finish on one side and the layers are put together with marine glue. :)

Still unsure about how you are going to connect the new transom to the old fiberglass shell. Do you like to work with the cloth or the matt the best? We will need to do the transom wood in our 74 Sleekcraft Kauai before long. This will be our first transom install and we need all the input we can get. Thanks Coop!
