On my sportfire the bow has lost a spot of gelcoat because someone else did not take care of it. I just used aquabuff 1000 and 2000 and the gel is gone. Just wondering if I put new gelcoat on will it be good as new or does the boat have to be repainted then gel coat? Thanks for any input.:brickwall:

I think you could re spray the old gelcoat with Clearcoat and that would fix it...Im not %100 sure though

One thing to watch out for with Clear....

It tends to discolour differently then gel. So you may want to make sure you just don't spot clear or it might start to look different over time. ;)

Is the area above the waterline, if not don't use regular paint, it will blister and peel. my boat was repainted using some type of automotive paint, by the previous owner, and has that problem. According to a local owner of a body shop paint will not hold up in a marine environment, especially on fiberglass, fibeglass is porous and holds moisture, and paint will not bond correctly to it. If it were me I would not waste time with paint, have the area re-gel coated. paint also scratches easier

Where is the spot? Are you sure the gel is gone, if the flake is still there, the gel is still there?

around the raised design on the bow. Do I just need to use more aquabuff. When you take your hand across it has a rough feeling and a look like when you lose clearcoat on a car -a faded milky white look?

It is hard to tell from the pic, but I would say it is orangepealed from heavy oxidation. Is the flake still there? I had one small spot on mine where the clear gel was gone but the flake goes with it, because it is in the clear. The black gel underneath actually still buffed out pretty well and you you wouldn't see it unless you were looking for it. I hit some places 5-6 times with AB 1000 to get the oxidation out. I'd keep working it, what do you have to lose, if the alternative is regelling?
