View Full Version : Hello
I'm going to look at what might be my first Checkmate tomorrow. All I know at this time is that it's red about 20' 225 Merc around 3 yrs old. with 23 hrs.
Anything in particular I should look for??

Welcome to the board Lou.
You might want to get it looked over by a good marina and make sure everything is AOK. It might save you from discovering stuff later.
I personally wouldn't buy any motor without doing a compression test that I witnessed. ;)
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the answer,I.m an old timer that has been there, done that, wore out the "T" shirt, and gave away the hat. Iwas a helper at a boat-builder that built wooden Jersey Skiffs ( way back) I've worked on Tugs, Coastwise Tankers, Launchs, Yachts, etc. I retired as a USCG civilian employee, title "Boat Builder" ~and~ I built my own airplane.
The reason for my quirey was: boats have quirks by design and manufacturer, I know nothing about Checkmates, therefore I came to ask the experts and the lovers of Checkmates.
I know the marine repair shop that has the boat stored (I helped them get the Premier Pontoon dealership). I know the boat from seeing it there, never saw it in the water, I'm going today to get the particulars, and look it over. I'm looking for that special insider info.
Thanks,
Lou

When you look at it see if you can find out the model (coast guard plate, or from the hull #, Checkmate can decode it).
Once you know the Checkmate model, there will be several folks here who have one like it and can share their experience with you. They helped me greatly on my Enforcer purchase by telling me where to look for problems.

Lou,
There isn't too much quirky stuff about a Checkie that I can think of. I guess like most fibreglass boats, you want to watch for wood rot in the transom, floor, stringers etc. And on a Pulsare you might want to do a little tapping on the hull and especially the pad and make sure everything is sound.
