I had a spray out the sides at full speed and after your very valuable imput lowered the motor and I think it helped but still have spray. maybe that's the way the hull is designed? the engine is basically on the transom. I think I will have to go get a Jack plate. Will a Jack plate allow the motor to go lower or will the motor just being 6" back take care of It? I am going to get my wife to video tape me coming bye to se how it is sitting! I seem to be getting 500 rpm more out of the motor so I think it is grabbing better? did not measure the motor before I put it in the water I will have to next time I pull the boat out! thank you very much I always value you advise! It seems odd to me that you would gain 500RPM by lowering the motor. Normally it is just the opposite. Did you notice an increase in speed as well?

What is the angle of the motor in relation to the water when you are going? Ideally, if you were able to take a carpenters square between the drive shaft and the water surface that is the most efficient trim angle to run. How high is the "roost"?

What prop are you running?

You could probably benefit from a 6" jackplate. But its a "package deal" with the right prop and what you want your boat to do well. Example, a boat set up for squeezing the last MPH out of it might have a lackluster holeshot and not carry weight worth a hoot. There is always some compromise.

thanks for responding. I am running a 21p lazer 11 and I definetly gained another 6 or 7 mph. the rpm change could be another few factors. The engine had anew powerhead on it so last year I did not even burn one tank and it still had oil in the tank I was breaking it in? I got the boat late in the year in mid august! the motor was trimed so the motor is level not much of a roost my trim was acting up they are putting a new pump in this week no charge which is nice. I just thought that since the prop seemed tograb more maybe that's why the more rpm? maybe my next tank I will pull in another few mph. As far as the use of my boat, I take the family for cruise's and I like to water ski so I think holeshot would be important But like everyone else I like to open it up every once and a while! I don't want to put performance parts or modify heads and stuff. I want it clean and reliable! I just see so many other boat's come buy my dock and they are riding on the back 2 ft of theboat and mine will not do that. thank you sorry to go on and on.

I am quite familiar with your setup, as I've driven one and then owned a 1992 Pulse 171 with an XR6, which probably had the same lower unit as yours.

First off, please take a straight edge and measure the propshaft compared to the bottom of the boat with the motor trimmed level. We need to know how many inches below the bottom of the boat the centerline of your propshaft is.

JW, I am pulling the boat out next sunday to get the new trim pump put in I will measure it then and post or PM you. thanks My wife won't let me spend money right now so I was hoping the lowering of the motor would have cured it. That's why I never got the jack plate yet. Your boat never had spray aou the sides?

When I was wide open in my Pulse 171 with the XR6, the only spray came from behind the transom, none out the side :thumb:

Great picture that's how I wish mine would ride! So I take a yard stick and put it on the bottom of the hull or tape it on and measure how much below the pad the prop shaft center is! In the picture your motor is trimed alittle more than I had mine I will try again this weekdend before I pull it out of the water! thanks

At that exact moment, I wasn't at my highest speed, but close. And I had the motor trimmed out a little too much for the effect. what I love about this picture is you can see each blade spray............................

I was spinning a 26" Laser II thru 1.78:1 gears
