Hello, My interior is still in the shop so I haven't had the chance to mess with the boat. Here it goes: I purchased a new tempest plus propeller: 48-825864a47 diameter: 14 5/8 pitch: 23. This was to go onto a pulse 186 with a 175 merc. Anyway, I tried putting the prop on with the new hub kit and it just doesn't look right and it hits the small skeg (don't know the exact name, but the small fin that is behind the prop. Did I in fact purchase the wrong diameter prop? Do I remove the skeg?? Any help is appreciated!

Hey Mich,
The fin you are talking about is the "Trim Tab". It is to offset the prop torque to help with the steering feedback. To run the Tempest you have two choices. You can simply cut the fin off or you can order the anode without the fin. You do not want to just unblolt it and get rid of it as it acts as a sacrificial anode also. If you run hydraulic or other NFB steering you don't need the anode with the fin.

So, I do have the right size in diameter prop??? Where would I acquire the trim tab you are referring to? Thanks!

I think almost any marine store will have them . I just got one for my yamaha, then when i tried a speedzone i trimed almost half it off just to find it wasnt the rite prop for my starflite.:( . Now i will be cutting the skeg off seeings its probably not even in the water at high speeds.
The Tempest has more rake than most props and will often hit the trim tab. Just put it on the grinder and knock the leading edge back some. It should have 1/4" clearance to be on the safe side because even an SS prop flexes under load.

Mich,
The Tempest only comes in a 14 5/8 Dia. So you don't have the wrong size.
You can either cut your trim tab off or grind the clearance you need as Mark suggested or order part# 76214Q5 at $16.45. It is up to you how you do it.

Jim

I had the same problem with the ballistic I was running. I just took the tab off and ground it down with a notch for clearance. Had no trouble with it after that.
