Bob,

Since I only run in the salt, I added on Mercs' closed cooling system before this motor ever touched the water. The system works great. It fit like a glove, maybe took a couple of hours for the install. Personally, I would never run salt water through one of these expensive engines. Being that I am on Long Islands' south shore, the other problem I have is shallow water and a drive with low water pick-up. Even though I know the waters, there are still times when I go exploring that end up in a shallow spot close to sucking sand. While Mercs' closed cooling system does keep the motor clean with anti-freeze, it does nothing to help the exhaust. The salt water is sucked up through the seawater pump and is used to cool the heat exchanger, then it exits through the exhaust. At least the motor stays clean.
After a days use, when returning to the rac storage, I usually flush out the raw water side. However, I will not lie and tell you that I do it every time. There are some days in the summer when there are too many boats waiting to be hauled and racked. Especially when I know I will be back the next day, I don't flush out.
