View Full Version : New Member 1980 Predictor II
I'm a new member from Ottawa ON.
Just love ripping it up when I can and looking at all sorts of boats, checkmates more so...cuz I got one.
Love to show it off, but can't figure how to do that at this point...too many :cheers I guess.....oh the "you may not post attachments" rule.
Anywho, the boat is a '80 predictor II, which now has a very heavy 2003 Johnson 115hp 4stroke, with a 26p ssp....so heavy it's actually something to see.
If you're curious, it does over 55 MPH, but you have to really hang on at that point.
The transom is new (pro rebuilt) and the top was done to look just like it did in 1980.
The bottom is orginal and is down to the wood in spots. Any ideas on how I can protect the keel and such....ON THE CHEAP?
Would antifoiling paint suffice?
Thanks
Love the site by-the-by.
Here is a pic from a very cheap camera

Welcome to the board. that 4 stroke looks like a monster on there. There are a getting to be more and more predictors on the board. Some of them pushing 80mph. I am shooting for 70 with mine once the new motor comes.
Thanks for your response.
I saw your post regarding the 150 you're wanting.
Not sure if I'm allowed to mention other models, but a friend of mine has a 16' sidewider (nice looking too) with an 80's black max and he claims to do 72MPH....so guess it's very do-able.
I'm not really sure what my boat does....will have to GPS it after 55, cuz it's out of the water at that point...fun but not safe in any way.
A silly long story but I still have that dongle type speedometer hanging off the back of the boat. The hose that is built into the engines speedometer is tied closed with a shoe lase....going down the lake one day and the thing spayed me in the back....did what I had too had the time.
Best of luck with the 150...just a question, do people still poo-poo on 4strokes?

Hey Lang.
Welcome to the board.
No worries on mentioning other brands, it's all good.
We're just a fan site.
I'd be interested to see some more pics of your boat and I'd be interested to see some of your buddies Winder. They're definitely one of the coolest looking boats ever, but most of the models were a handful to drive because of the hull design.
Keep tearin' it up in Ottawa. :thumb:
ya....you just got to see this winder.
Guy does graphics designs for a living, signs and such.
The most beautiful finish I've ever seen.
Just like when I saw my boat...like a new penny
Anywho, I'm thinking we (the winder and I) are going to hook up shortly.
Planning to take him on....does he really do 72HPM? Going to find out.
oh...the other friend has a checkmate, don't know which kind but will find out for you. It's small-ish, new-ish, has a 300 and does over 80. These guys are fun. Saw him jump it out of the water while going 30MPH.
I've been in that winder lots...sitting on the windshield so that the nose would sit to pull up a skier, crazy fun and I know it's fast....going to loose but will have fun loosing.
Never know....would be great to post the winder 80's 150 black max VS the checkmate 2003 4stroke Johnson 115 checkmate video....
I just love crushing other boats with much more HP then mine, but this one will be a challenge.

Most of the Winders I've seen had round bottoms. So they typically tended to chinewalk pretty badly in stock form. It seems like from what I've read on the forums hitting anything over 60 is tough to achieve due to the handling.
I thought I saw a few members on Scream mention adding a pad to some Winders and them being much better afterwards, which would make sense. But who knows? Sidewinders got splashed a lot too and the company had a rocky history with lots of twists and turns. Definitely a kewl looking ride though. I always wanted one as a kid. One of our neighbors at the cottage had one, "back in the day" and they rolled it out front of our place on one sunny afternoon.
Just purchased a 34" trailer in the same park (trailer park..not boat trailer) as my friend with the sidewider, and the other guy with a new-ish checkmate.
Will get photos/details and hopefully some video.
May be spending much of the summer there, so I may not be posting much (some may say...cheers to that).
Anywho, will post the stuff when I get back to the big city of Ottawa.
Thanks to everyone who works during the day while I'm on parental leave..."ripping it up in Ottawa" as long as I have gas money.
Oh...did I mention the 4strokes burn next to no gas...been on the same 5 gallon tank for two weeks now and it's more then 1/2...and I didn't fill it.
Chow for now.

I have a friend who use to have a sidewinder Jet boat. He could do 70mph but a jet boat is a different story than an outboard. The jet boat just plowed through the water. A winder outboard at 70mph would be a major handful. No pad on that boat. I have seen pictures on scream and fly of winders totally aired out though so I know its possible.
