Prop?

What should I do now? I’m trying to find the best all around prop for my boat. So far I’ve had on the boat a 23 High five 66.7mph at rev limiter. 25 laser II 69 at around 5800rpm. 26 mazco 70 at 5600. 26 trophy plus 69 at 5400. The problem is the best prop so far for all around cruising and gas consumption is the trophy plus but it sucks out of the hole (it wants to blow out). Should I remove the vent plugs from the trophy or plug them up or do I need that ventilation ring that I’ve head some people talk about. I think this boat should be able to get some where around 72-74mph. I just need to keep working on the setup any thing will help. The boat is a 1996 Pulsare 21 BR 225EFI 12” setback hydro jack plate hydro steering.

Part of the design features of the PVS system on the Trophy Plus and Tempest Plus props are that by changing the size of the holes you can tune your holeshot. This regulated amount of exhuast over the blades creates slip and allows the motor to spool up quicker (get into the powerband and launch harder. For example on a Hydrostream with an over the hub chopper it is not uncommon for the motor to rev to 6000RPM when launch out of the hole. I No if it revs and doesn't go anywhere there is a problem. If the boat still pulls hard while reving that is OK and desirable often. You can buy different size plugs and try them. If your prop is allowing the motor to spin up too fast, or blow out as you say, then you would put smaller vents into it.

I think the trophy is a very good prop for that boat, as would be a Tempest Plus.

You should play with your jackplate height to get best performance for each prop. You'll find you can run some higher than others.

I am running the same 27" Trophy plus on my 2000br that I ran on the 2100. I am running 12" set back (manual) with the motor jacked as high as it will go, 2 of the vent plugs removed completely, and a blow out ring. So far, this set up is good for 75mph-gps at 5500 rpm and a fair hole shot. boatman

what is a blow out ring and do you know what part number it is? thanks for the info.

The blow out ring is used on the small hub Trophy Plus to keep the exhaust from coming iut around the blades. I have an extra one in stock if anybody needs one. The boat runs better without the blowout ring when hauling a load, but hard to get on plane. By my self, 75 with and 74 without. Me and my son, 72.5 without and 71 with. boatman

Part # is 878421. $9+postage. It is a plastic ring that slips on the base of the prop. boatman

I took my 2" spacers off today in an effort to gain a little more top end. Can't wait to try it. boatman

I believe that Dave at Fargo Checkmate when he was running his '96 Pulsare 2100 with 225 promax 10" setabck was running a 25 tempest, jacked all the way up and ran 78 on a gps. From what I've seen and people I ahve talked to, the Tempest seems like the best all around. I have a laser and dont like it. Just my oppinion.

I agree i didn't like the Laser II. I want to try a tempest but i figured i would get the blow out ring and try it with the trophy and see what it does to the hole shot. overall the trophy is the best prop for cruzin i've tried so for (good on gas) once on a plan. also i have a friend with the 18 pluse w/225efi and the prop that works best on his is a ventilated Bravo II 24 you may want to try that on yours with a smaller pitch.

If venting is excessive for non-Mercury applications a seal ring 878421 allows the exhaust to pass through the inner hub

This part is actually called a sealing ring and can be ordered through any Mercury dealer if you want. It forces the exhaust that would run over the tube of the Trophy to be forced through it. You can also change the size of the PVS vents they are really cheap about $1.25 each

Technically, a "blowout ring" is a ring added to a gearcase that will extend the torpedo length and minumize the chance of blowout as the water has a longer surface to adhere to. This is typically used on boats with hi engine heights with chopper and cleaver props. The raised square edge at the back of the torpedo on Mercury gearcases are designed to act as a blowout ring.
