View Full Version : Which prop for all-around?

I have a 15 footer with a Mercury 90HP that was from a Pontoon (ugh)... it does have great compression and runs perfect.... it has a 2 blade 17P prop on it know.... and i think it was what was on the pontooner:confused:
I am wondering what the best "all-around" prop would be for ski/tube/cruise duty? and cost?
....also what would be the best "bang-for-the-buck" prop for high speed runs? cost?
Thanks to any and all feedback...

A very had question. So many props so little time. Whats the rpm running right now?
A laser 2 works real well on the smaller light weight mates. As far as pitch goes, well I'm not sure.
Actually, I'd be putting a good 3 blade aluminum prop on that setup. With a 90, it won't be going fast enough to burn up the blades, so save the $$$ and try out some 3-blade aluminums. I'd try a 19" first, see what happens. Make sure your tachometer is accurate.

..well, just got back from an extended weekend with the new boat, and it ran very nicely! Tubin' was fun and we popped a skier out of the water without adoo, but the top end was a measly 37,38mph??? She does an honest 30 all day, and can maintain 35 on calm waters, but I'm feeling like I have the worst possible prop on her!
Is a three blade 19" a significant jump from the 2 blade 17??
If it is I will try to track one down... a nice used one should do the trick?

Johnny,
What were your RPMs? Was the boat loaded heavy? I would have thought you'd see the upper 40s if not 50.

Jim

no tach so I have no idea on the revs (I'll throw one on in the winter)
the boat has a 19 gallon tank up under the bow, but even at 1/4 tank and just me in it (240lbs) the boat was a dog!!
The motor runs smooth
....is it the consensus that I look for an alum 3-blade 19 pitch prop?

Here's a pic of the 2 blade 19 pitch prop that's on my 900 right now...
...it was thrown on buy the last owner when he took off the three blade "chewed-up" prop off..... he thinks it was a 3 blade 17 pitch???

...I am about to try an alum 3 blade with either 17 or 19 pitch.... your thoughts?????

I have yet to get a different prop for my 13'.... I have gotten an offer from another forum member to buy his 21pitch cleaver for $100..... I am not familiar with these props enough, does Mercury even make a cleaver for my old 900 90HP with thru hub exhaust?
I need a good price on a used 21 or 23 pitch..... any ideas?

i seriously think 23 pitch will be too much.
as 23 is what i need for my 200 ob.
i still have that prop if interested. i really need to get rid of it otherwise its gonna become a fancy anchor

I still don't think it'll fit, but there is one way to find out, pull up and try.... if it fit I'd love a quick test run... would I launch from Brandenburg park? or are you a bit more north?

umm there is a launch after the harsens island ferry. on your right hand side. thats closest .. if you wanna see if it will fit.. then meet me at the north east side of russel island.. on the south channel..if your coming up from the north channel.. or middle channel travel up the st clair river and make a right at the first point buoy. its red. then follow down the south channel and there will be docks on your right.. then go to where the docks stop and youll see a big open spoton your right hand side. ill be near the reeds chillin in my swim/ clean/ prop change area. in the yellow enchanter with the black bottom
just lemme know the day you wanna come out.

I run a 19 on my 16' enticer with a inline 6 merc 90. Holeshot is decent, top end is about 45 (gps) with no more than 2 people in the boat and 1/2 tank of fuel (tank in th rear.) Engine is also transom mounted and about 5.5" down from the pad. I think it would handle a 21, but a 23 would be too much (at least for mine.)

Johnny, I also have a 90 Black motor and your 90 won't possibly be able to spin anything more than a 21" pitch prop. Try a 21" pitch Hustler Alum. and I think you will be real close to the proper WOT rpm. The worse that could happen is that you would smoke your motor by over propping it. PM me and I'll tell you all the props I tried and the results.
