My steering system is the same as the manual system in this article:
http://www.diynetwork.com/diy/bo_maintenance_repair/article/0,2021,DIY_13718_2278187,00.html

With the motor in neutral, it seems fine. As soon as I shift into gear, there are spots that bind. (Feels like a rack going bad on a car) At cruising speed it seems to get worse.
I have re-greased the engine pivot and also followed the above article as best I could. I could not get the wiper nut off.

Does it sound like the steering assy or something sticking on the motor?
The steering was new in 2003. The boat was not in the water last year.
Also did not grease the steering last year.

Thanks

Is it slipping in one direction but not the other? Like maybe the added force of the prop torque is causing the slip in the rack?

Sorry, just noticed the hyd. steering.......have you bled the system? I wouldn't think that would make it bind, but it's the only other maintenance that system should need.

It is not a hyd. system.
Does the rack under the dash need any maintenance? (Grease)

Thanks
