Seat Bases... Or whatever they may be called.

While on the lake this weekend, I put the hammer down, My bucket seat ripped from the seat base and the seat and I both ended up in the back of the boat. After assesing the situation/damage/repairs needed, I noticed that the top of the seat base is kinda weak. I am going to replace the buckets with new fold down fishing chairs straight out of the Overton's catalog (pg214) on pedestal sets.

Any idea/suggestions on making these bases stronger? or is ripping them out and bolting a pedestal to the stringers an option. Anyone? Anyone?

Thanks
Lanny

I sent ya a PM on the bases.
Before you buy the seats have a look at this site. http://store.yahoo.com/veadastore/index.html
That have some great seats and will do colors.

I think you should rebuild the seat boxes and recover the factory saets as needed. You may need to replace the wood in bottom of the fiberglass bucket seats if it is gone as well. This kind of repair work is not that hard. It will save you some cash and save the classic look of the boat. What kind of Mate do you have? If it's a smaller one you will need to really watch where you connect the new base! On my 86 Enticer the seat boxes are 1/2 way over on the floor area and 1/2 way over on the hull area. One screw in the wrong place and 'Weeeeeeeeee I just drilled a hole through my hull" Just my 2cents.

i have replaced the boxes in 2 of my mates

just glass in new wood with epoxy resin and put the carpet back over them

if you want pedestal bases you still have to make bases for them

none of the aftermarket seats will look as good as the original seats

good luck daren

Just to let you know- I bought my seats from veada and the company treated me great! You can see pics of the seats in overhaulin- 80 sportfire rebuild page 6. The problem I had was there was no interior to fall back on for a recover job. Hope this helps you out a little
