View Full Version : The Merc & Yamas 250s DIs
Anyone running Opti-max or the V-Max on Starflites? I would like to get info on there speed and also the prices. I was thinking of getting my 225 modified up to 280 hp but I,m concerned about the higher location of the cooling water pick-up. These new motors have the pick-ups much lower then mine. I ride in a fair amount of chop due to allot of boat traffic and a fair amount of breezes. It seems that if the chop is right its not to hard to run with the prop catching air more often then you'll like. So I'm leanning towards going new and having allot less to worry about.

Hi,
The mercury is much faster than a yamie, you can reed al that on the bass boat central and the tests on the internet, and the mercury get's more rpm 6250 before the rev and the yamie 5900 before the rev hits in

Nice site Sake, thanks, but I did not see any solid comparions.I've read the Merc 250 is about 275 hp. I've also heard the Yama is close to that. From what I've seen the Yamas are priced allot lower. The Yama also goes better with my boats colors, Red, White & Black Which is way i left out the Rudes HOs (Brain, thanks anyway). Its still a ways off though

I use too hafe a 1989 starflite, with a 225 efi mercury, i know she runs great with this engine about 71 mph on the gps, the yamaha runs very smooth the mercury is a littele more vibrating, hope you wil finde the right engine for your boat, the yamie would be a good choice also, and the feul of a yamie is less than a mercury!

The merc will spank the yamadog and the sheep
If you bump it up to a 280, I suggest a spare powerhead. There's a goo
d chance of blowing it up

Yamaha's are pretty decent motors from what I've read and heard. They've actually made quite a few motors for Mercury. I believe they made a bunch of four stroke blocks and a few smaller motors from what I recall.
So Merc must have confidence in them.

Thanks again guys. Someone at Scream gave me a Bass-Boatters site http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/bassboard/boats_motors/T70359.htm#8 They all say the Merc will go about 3-6 mph faster then the yamaha but also say if you don't need the speed the yamaha is about 2k cheaper and you get up to five years warranty for only $800,3+2yrs. Sounds allot better then the mercs 1 yr.

I'm A big Yamaha fan, Love the reliability of the motors. There are a few good comparison articles on www.bassandwalleyboats.com (http://www.bassandwalleyboats.com) Most of the reviews seem to be a draw, some benifits to the Merc, some to the Yami. It depends on what models there comparing and what you want out of it. I saw some at the boat shows last winter, They sure are pretty.
and for the cat lovers there is an article on a new cat bass boat, the reviewers loved its performance.
F150gt, I can't open that site. any chance of Eimailing me the article?

Yea, I found that out a short time after . I should have up-dated the post with the proper link. Looked at your Hrdro dynamic racing site, its interesting. How many boats do you produce in a year. Seems like there could be a good market there.

Optis....three years.
Four Stroke....three years

But I could be wrong! http://checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/biggthumpup.gif
