Looks like there are a growing number of us in this area.
Maybe we could plan something late July early August? (Warmest Temps)
Also need the extra time to finish putting the floor and seats in!!
It would be nice to meet other members outside of this computer!!
Thanks!!

As far as I know, there is a new Checkmate dealer (2005) in the Sebago area. Thought it might be a nice idea if we could swing by. But, there are 2 problems: Time & Gas Prices. I wouldn't expect people from MA/VT/NH to drive that distance unless they were already close by. Just another idea.
We also should consider a central meeting place unless someone has a place on the water. (Cookout etc)
Any other ideas???

I've been reading about some interest in a get-together for us New Englanders. If anyone has an interest maybe we can get an informal get together planned for this summer, If anyone has any ideas for dates or locations let's see if we can put something together. I have a summer place on Lake Ossipee in Freedon, NH but do most of my boating on Winnipesaukee or Lake Sebago in Maine. I prefer Sebago as it is less commercialized and much less boat traffic. Either lake will be great. I am no expert on either but I have been to both numerous times. I'm sure there are others on this board that have more knowledge than I. If anyone has any ideas lets hear them! After clearing the 15" of snow we just got today Ive had enough and I'm getting anxious to get into boating season.

I am definately interested. Doing that run on Sebago sounds cool, I would definatley like to do the river section that you were talking about. I am thinking around August would be good. Perhaps you could post the town that the boat launch is at, that way we start mapquesting. Do you think we should go for 1 or 2 days? 2 days would give us some room if one day had bad weather. My parents cottage is 38 miles from the town of Sebago, so I would be up for 2 days, provided I can get those days off.

How about the 4th and 5th of August at Sebago Lake.
lt133
03-18-2007, 12:57 AM
Any day would be fine w/me. I should be able to get any of those days off. The ramp I use is in Standish, ME. It is actually on Northeast Rd. Ext. If you Mapquest it use Northeast Rd. Standish, ME and use the highest number. Mapquest will not give you the exact address at the ramp. Follow the map to the end of the road and you will see the lake. If you go to the sattelite image you can see the ramp and the lake. There are several other ramps on the lake, I will try to get the address of them. I use this ramp because (1) it is closest to me, (2) deep water, easy launch, (3) plenty of parking, (4) $5.00 launch fee on weekends, free on weekdays. 2 days sounds good to me. Worse case scenario, I would be open to have people at my place in Freedom, not a bad lake, smaller, but lots of fun. I'm sure I could throw together an impromptu clam bake! If people could get a couple of days off, an added trip to Winnipesaukee would be enjoyable also. If needed, I can get some info on accomodations for the area, whether it be at Sebago or nearby. I have two fellow employees who own Checkmates who are already in.

That sounds great. August would be ideal for me. Ive never been to Sebago so I'de have to follow you guys around if we decide on that. My work schedule is very flexible so I'm definitely in. Still not sure which boat Ide bring though...The predictor's trailer is a POS and Ide be worried about the trip and the Rallysport is a gas hog...oh well still plenty of time to prep/plan.
Are they any campsites on the lake?

Sounds like we have some interest here! We need some dates so people can plan. I'm open for any dates but the lakes are at their best last 2 wks July/1st 2 wks of August. Do we want a weekend or a weekday? Doesn't matter either way to me. There are campgrounds on the lake. Sebago State Park is one I know of, I know of a few people who have stayed there (with boats, they have moorings) who state its a good place for the campers.

My trailer has been an issue for me. Believe it or not, I have to take the axles and 1 fender off my C-Hawk, and tip it on its side for the summer!! I stand it up against the wall inside my garage. You can just barely see the trailer on the right , in the attached picture. That car belongs to a customer of mine. i did an engine for him last summer.

Doesnt it get cold up there in the fall?? I know the lakes must be a sight to see, but man I hate cold weather.
Hey Bob,
I like bouncing around in the Atlantic!! I am sure I would like running around in a lake for a change. Just curious, how are the noise regulations up there. Dont tell me... you dont have to worry about them, right. When I was running full dry pipes, I used to get pulled over alot. Then I got smarter and put on a set of GGB Extremes. Now, its pretty reasonable. I have uploaded this video before, but here it is again. Cant hear the engine much over the wind noise. Plus my camera man was a bit nervous holding a camera while bouncing around. This is running along the south shore of Long Island, a place called Long Beach. This is the Atlantic on a very calm day. You can see the weather turned bad. Had to get back in asap.

C'mom Vin, it's not that cold in the fall! Actually, kidding aside, some of my best days on the lake have been late September/early October on the few days it ventures into the upper 70's. And yes, I do have to worry about the noise. I blew the motor I'm currently replacing on my way back from a mandated Marine Patrol decibel test on Winnipesaukee. (Passed though, 85 decibels or less, I was at 85!). It got so bad the last few years on my lake that I was just in my car with my kids last week and they were talking about the boat, wondering when it would be fixed. My 6 year old daughter says "Dad, how come you always have to talk to the other policemen when we're out in the boat?" Ya think I get stopped enough?. New Hampshire is a lot more aggressive with the noise law/testing. Maine seems to be a little more lenient/accomodating.
vinny p.
03-24-2007, 11:59 PM
I wouldnt have a chance in hell of not getting busted for noise there. Here, it seems to be a bit more lax. As long as you keep it quiet in certain areas, which for me is impossible. I just avoid them at peak hours.

FYI
Average temperatures from Portland, Maine
The following data from site:
http://portlandme.about.com/library/blmainetemps.htm
Portland Maine Temperatures
Average Portland Maine Temperatures By Month
Maine's weather is temperamental at best. That's why we say in Maine "if you don't like the weather, wait a minute." We also say "there's two seasons in Maine: winter and 4th of July." But that's another story...
These average temperatures can give you some idea of what to expect in any given month, but it's always a good idea to be prepared for something totally different. In the summer, always bring a raincoat and a jacket or sweater, especially if you're going to be on a :) BOAT :) or on the coast.

The noise laws on Winni ARE getting worse but I have found as long as you are not killing it in certain areas they really don't bother you. I thought Sebago didn't have a noise restriction?? I have captains call so I can switch down even though it is Illegal in NH (what a stupid law)

There is a marina in Naples, Moose Landing
http://www.mooselandingmarina.com
which started selling Checkmates in 2004,2005 or 2006.
One of our members, SL , bought a new Check from them.
His site: http://www.adeveloper.com/boat
I thought we could contact the marina to see if they might want a group of Checkmate owners show up for a short gathering. Maybe we could meet there, meet the owners etc..
Has this been done at other dealers?
Just a thought......
Also, have not seen a post from SL lately.
I bet he would be interested in this New England Get Together
chrisG

The Maine noise limits are 90 decibels stationary and 75 underway. The captains call is also illegal in Maine too! I found this out last season. The wardens can make you open your exhaust, test you, and then ticket you if you fail. They can also have you do a drive by test at a certain distance and speed so if you have mufflers like the North Stars which open up at a certain rpm they can get ya. I got lucky last year. My friend has a slip at Moose Landing Marina in Naples. Nice place. Most of the Checkmates I've seen there are outboards. The State Park beach on Sebago is also a great place to hang out.

ChrisG,
Which one is Moose Landing? Is that the one on the Brandy Pond side by the bridge? If it is I might have to comment on the girl who fueled my boat there last year!
chrisG
03-28-2007, 06:52 PM
It133, No that is Causeway Marina your talking about by the bridge. There has always been girls working those gas pumps since the early 90's. Some I believe are the owners' daughters. Moose Landing is on Brandy Pond but on the far left as you exit the no wake zone going into Brandy. He has expanded alot in the past few years.

Dreamer,
Just to clarify, I've never been stopped on Sebago, probably one of the reasons I prefer to go there. I know Winni can be tough but I've never had a problem there either. I have a place on Ossipee Lake, between Winni and Sebago. Much smaller lake and my boat stands out there much more (mostly pontoon boats and smaller runabouts). I get stopped on Ossipee 5 or 6 times a year, I figured they'd know me by now but apparently not. For whatever reason, the Marine Patrol hits Ossipee hard during the summer. At one point last year they had four patrol boats monitoring the channel and sandbar (two at each end) and one unmarked patrol boat in the middle. Not like there is a big problem with boaters in this area, I just don't get it.

Ok,
Boat is starting to come together. Motor is going in this week, hydraulic steering is 90% installed and the wife has given me the blessing (after $28,000 in new windows and wood floors for the house!) In the midst of an April Noreaster the boat is coming together and I'm starting to get excited about the upcoming season. I know it's still a little early, but do we still have some interest in this Sebago get together? I know some need to know in advance, is the week of August 3-6 look like a go for everyone? If not, I'm flexible, any get together is a plus for me.

Hi It133,
Spend most of my time up around Wolfeboro. Also at the Long Island bridge in Moultonboro. :surf:

OK,
I know it's been awhile. I've finally got the boat back together, new power installed, full hydraulic steering etc and got most of the bugs worked out. I only have about 1 1/2 hours on it but everything seems to be running perfect. Family issues squared away, work has settled down, and now it's time to get down to business. Are we still on for the weekend of August 3,4,5? I'll be up there for a least two weeks and any of those days will work (hopefully the one with the best weather). If all goes well and I'm confident I'm not going to have any issues with the boat I'll be heading over to Winnipesaukee and/or Sebago next week. If anyone needs me to get info for them let me know and I'll see what I can do (campgrounds, hotels, marinas, ramps, etc.).

I'll be up for the weekend at my place on Ossipee so any of the weekend days are good for me. We should plan on Saturday. I'll be at the ramp by 9:00 am in Standish. We should all meet up at the sand bar at the entrance to the Songo River. You can pick up a map of the lake at any of the boat ramps. I believe the fee for the ramp on a weekend is either $5 or $10, at least in Standish. When you approach the markers to enter the Songo River you will see a large beach area to your right. There will probably be many boats anchored there. We usually anchor closest to the River entrance side. It's a great place for smimming and hanging out, nice sandy bottom and probably the easiest for everyone to find. Hope to see everyone there on Saturday. I should be at the sand bar around 11:00 (25 Convincor white with red/white/blue american flag style graphics with a 28' Maxxum black/red/white).

Vinny,
Sorry you can't make it. It it a long haul for you.
I will be taking a digital camera and video camera.
I am sure there will be others also.
I know this does not take the place of being there.
Hopefully we can have the 2nd annual New England Get Together next year and have you there!!
Note to All Attending:
There is a launch in the State Park which is very near the sandbar we are meeting at. Anyone use this one before?

Closest ramp for you to get to would be Standish, its the southern most point of the lake. That's where I'm gonna throw in...I'm hoping to be there by 10. Here is a link...

The Standish ramp is 20 to 25 miles away from the State Park ramp and 10 miles by water. I will probably use the State Park ramp as I will be closest to it when I get into the area.
Should we PM any cell numbers or just wing it?
I am planning to be at the sandbar between 10 and 11.

It looks to me like the closest ramp to the sand bar would be the state park ramp, correct? What is the best way to get there, I will be coming from Wakefield, NH (near RT 153, 16, and 110).

Yup, the closest ramp to the sandbar is the state park ramp. I'm leaving from wakefield sat morning to, but I'm gonna drop in at the standish ramp caus its quite a bit closer than driving to the state park ramp.
But from wakefield to get to the state park take 16 north to 25 east to rt 5, to rt 113, to rt 11/114 will get you there...its not that bad of a ride, should take you about an hour and half or so.
If you wanna drop in at the standish ramp, you can follow me from wakefield if you like...we're planning on leaving town around 8:30 or so.

Jeff,
I guess I will put in at Standish as well. The only reason I was looking to get closer to the sandbar was in case I had some problems, becuase it would be easier to get home.

Sneaky,
Thanks for doing that. I was wondering the same thing!
I also went through the posts to get an idea of ages.
I noticed that cvx16cvx may have been waiting for a conformation email.
I sent one this morning.
My son will be with me. He is 23.
He should leave Sebago with a big smile on his face.
Hope there is room in one of the other Checks so he can get a ride!!

Great East,
I have a very short video clip of you out in the middle of the lake.
Great sounding motor!!
I will get that posted shortly.
The 1-3 ft swells made it a bit challenging to get a steady shot!!

Hey Guys,
If there is any interest in doing this again this year, I am building a house close to the beach where you guys met. It is up the river just past the locks, very protected, about 1/2 mile drive from the state park ramp (which is in the river). I hope to have running water this year, but if not, there will be a porta potti:).
There is a dock which was the first thing I put in:cheers.
There is plenty of room for tents, plenty of room for trailers/cars. Feel free to make a weekend out of it, especially if anyone wants to come from far away. There are showers close by as well (within the state park) if I don't have running water yet. I also have a camper that I am using while I am building the house that sleeps 4.
We can leave the boats on the dock for the weekend, it is well protected from the wind/waves.
Any weekend will work for me, I will probably be there working anyway, and if I am not there, you are still welcome to hang out.

I plan on getting back there again this year. I get over to Sebago at least 8-10 times a season. Hopefully I won't have any engine issues this year. Looks like I should be running 550-575 hp this year after fixing last years screw ups. We'll see how it goes. When you say you are on the other side of the locks are you talking about Brandy Pond? Long Lake? Let me know, we're up there all the time, beautiful area....maybe we'll hook up if we get a chance.

LT, I'm located on the river just north of the locks (short of brandy pond). If your going north, once your through the locks, it is after the 2nd bend up on the hill on the right (it is very much under construction so it should be easy to see).
There is a dock, but you will only see a malibu there (am I allowed to say that:sssh:). I doubt if I will have my checkmate complete this year, but you never know.
Your welcome to stop any time.

I hope to be in this year, I made it last year, but didn't make it off the dock due to a bad shift interupter...
