View Full Version : All about Eve

I thought I would take a moment to discuss new software which will be coming in about a month or so. JW brought up some of the features that Eve employs in the other thread located... here (http://checkmate-boats.com/groupee/forums?a=tpc&s=8626072361&f=1406095561&m=716006226). These are features that a number of you have also been asking for so we might as well start the discussion, and see whatever everyone thinks.

So JW and everyone, we will soon have the ability to add some of the most requested features in the not too distant future. A new message board platform "Eve" is scheduled to be released on January 26th. Infopop said it will take them a week or two to convert all the sites to Eve but the bottom line is that in less than a month we will be converted. And all sites will be converted to the new software, we have no choice. But the good news is that things will more or less look and function exactly as they have in the past.

What the "Eve" platform will give us the ability to do, is create a Premium membership service which is called "Thrive". What Thrive does is allow us to create a package of features that members could get for a small fee. Features such as a chat function, a photo album, maybe even a members only forum.

Here is a few of the features and how they would work.

The photo album feature would allow a member to have their own piece of space on the server which they would have the ability to upload files to. Each member would control/manage their space, so what you use it for, would really be up to each member. You could upload pics, avatars, custom photos or even a small movie. The space wouldn't be unlimited, so it would be up to each member manage their space as they see fit. And it would be up to me to determine how much space each member would get.

There is also a chat option coming called "Chime". A chat room is something people have asked for in the past. Although I must say that from my experience, I've never seen message board yet that has a chat function, where people actually use it.

So the photo album and Chime would be the two main pieces a member would recieve for a membership. Collectively, we could also come up with some other perks to go along with it. For example a members only forum. Which would allow premium members a place of their own to post. Another feature that MIGHT and I stress the word MIGHT, be possible for you to get is a @Checkmate-Boats.com email address as part of the membership. Infopop have also indicated that there are more features coming, but only after they get these key modules functioning first.

Payment for the premium membership/features would be done through a payment system which would be part of the board itself and administrated through Infopop. They would simply deduct any donations/payments received from our monthly bill.

My opinion about the program is that I'm easy. If you guys want these features then we'll look at implementing them. If you don't, then we'll continue as is.

I KNOW, people would like the ability to upload photos, the question has always been about how to pay for it. We have no sponsers and we don't sell merchandise or accept donations. When we host photos and then display them it eats up TONS of bandwidth. And bandwidth is expensive. When I post photos I always see a spike the first few days when everyone goes into the thread and (downloads) views them. Then once they have seen them and the files are on their hard drive the bandwidth goes back down again. Part of this is also that people tend to look at threads that have new replies, but I digress.

Anyway, that is what's coming in the next few weeks to a month. If enough people want the features then you'll probably get it for a fee. If you don't then we'll continue as we have albeit with updated software called eve.

Please feel free to ask any questions, make suggestions or give feedback about what you think about Eve.

By the way, just a little stats pack for you.

We are quickly approaching an average of 750,000 hits on our server each month. We aren't quite there yet, but we have been growing a little each month and this month we will probably be close to 700K. I would say that 1,000,000 hits is probably in sight. Typically during the summer months most message boards slow down and in the winter they pick back up. So it's conceivable that we might acheive 1 Million hits in a month either just before summer or during the early fall of this year. Which is pretty amazing especially when you contrast that with Sceam and Fly which Greg said is currently averaging between 6-8 Million per month. I have always thought of Scream as huge, but we are slowly creeping up ourselves.

We also have 15,000 stored messages, 704 members and we are averaging somewhere between 100-140 unique visits (different people) per day. And each month we continue to grow and surpass the previous in most categories. The one area which I have found that we have been slower in growing is the number of unique people who post and the overall quantity of posts per day. Generally about 15 different people post per day, and about 70 total members post on the board each month. The average daily messages posted on the board is about 35-50 posts per day but we do hit over 100 and sometimes 200 on occasion. On average we sign up two new members per day.

Interesting I hope. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

As soon as we find out how much per month or year a 'premium' membership will cost, Chris will let everyone know. I think the at-will picture uploading should be part of the premium service. Otherwise, 'regular' members can still have Chris post pix without having to become a 'premium' member, or pix can still be 'linked' here from another photo album site. G- rated pictures only I'm sure!

I've just received confirmation we will updated on the 26th of January.

I just wanted to apologize to anyone who had trouble accessing the site yesterday. Our server had some troubles and oddly, it seemed to effect members trying to access the board from some areas. Hopefully once we are changed over to the new updated software everything will run smoother than it has the last month or so.

Just a reminder that we are scheduled to have our software updated tomorrow. Hopefully it will indeed happen. Assuming it does, we may experience some short periods of down time.

It should be worth it in the end though. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

Not yet. When it is updated you really won't notice much of a change. On the bottom of the board it will say Eve in the copyright area. Eve is more something that gives us capabilities to do some things we currently can't. It's something that will be more apparent behind the scenes. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I recieved an email on the weekend that Infopop is working on the upgrade. They have run into a few problems with the first sites they migrated so they are tweaking the program that was written to convert us to the new software.

So stay tuned, it should be done fairly soon. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif

I just received an email notifying me that our site will be upgraded on Thursday February 12th. They expect to start the upgrade at around 8:00 AM Pacific time or 11:00 AM EST.

To complete the upgrade the board will be down for approximately an hour.

Also note that the new board software requires at minimum the following browsers,

IE 5.5+, Netscape 7+, Mozilla, Safari or Opera 7+.

If you are using browsers older than the above listed ones, the board may not display or function correctly.

I received another email saying we would be upgraded sometime today. Mind you this is about the third time I've been told we will be upgraded, so take it for what it's worth.

If they do upgrade us we will be down for anywhere between approximately 15-60 minutes.

Well, we've finally been upgraded to EVE. I'll have to go through the board and reset a bunch of the custom images, settings, graphics etc. I'll have to work on it a little later today, after I get home from work.

Everyone should review their own preferences and settings and make sure you set everything to how you like it. It will probably take all of us some time to get used to the new software, ESPECIALLY ME! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif
