Here is the caption- That's all I know other than a state trooper took the photos.

Check out this boat wreck that happened on Hartwell the other day.
It is a 38 foot Fountain. The owner had it for about a week and has not made the first payment on the 375,000 dollar pricetag. He was going 80 mph made sharp turn, it threw him and his passenger out of the boat. He did not have his kill switch on, so it steadily accelerated until it hit the bank and went airborne.

That happened a month or so ago at Lake Hartwell, SC. Like Dave said, "More money then brains!"

That was posted over at Speedwake a while back. I think there was some kind of mechanical malfunction or something....I don't remember exactly.

there have been several similar recently , all stepped hulls , quick turns at high speeds causes the stern to break loose with the waters surface and come around spinning the boat out of control and ejecting driver/passengers .

I BELIEVE THE ONLY MECHANICAL MALFUNCTION IN THAT FOUNTAIN WAS THE OPERATOR OF THE BOAT. ALL STEP BOTTOM BOATS INHERINTLY TURN DIFFERENT FROM A TRUE V BOTTOM. MOST DEEP V'S LIKE THE DRIVES TUCKED IN DURING A SHARP TURN. THIS BURIES MORE RAIL IN THE WATER CREATING DRAG ON THE INNER SIDE OF THE TURN AND KEEPS THE BOW DOWN DURING THE TURN. IN A STEP BOTTOM BOAT, TUCKING THE DRIVES IN WILL EVENTUALLY ALLOW THE KEEL TO BRAKE FREE FROM THE STEP TO THE TRANSOM THEREBY CAUSING THE BOAT TO SWAP ENDS. THE FRONT OF THE KEEL STILL HAS BITE IN THE WATER WHILE THE BACK OF THE KEEL BRAKES FREE, AIRATES, AND BEGINS TO SLIDE. ONCE THE BOAT STOPS SLIDING AND LEVELS OFF THE INERTIA FROM THE TURN SHIFTS THE BOAT TO LEAN ON THE OUTER TURN RAIL UNTIL IT BITES WATER AND BARREL ROLLS. I HAVE SPOKEN TO A FEW PEOPLE THAT HAVE ROLLED STEP BOTTOM BOATS. IN ALL CASES THE ROLL OVER WAS RELATIVELY SLOW. IT DID NOT "THROW" EVERYONE OVERBOARD. IT WAS MORE LIKE "SLOWLY TIPPING OVER, OH #%&*, I THINK WE'RE GONNA GET WET!" STILL A SCARY EXPERIENCE FOR THOSE INVOLVED AND A VERY EXPENSIVE LESSON. THE GUY IN THAT FOUNTAIN WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF BARREL ROLLING THAN BAILING OUT AND LETTING THE BOAT TAKE OFF ON ITS OWN!!! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif

Another boater and I tried to wave his boat off. He just kept coming, at about 50 MPH. Well he came to a sudden stop, at which time a Coast Guard boat took notice and came over to tow them, which I never seen them do before. I later found out the reason they did was cause the boat was sinking. Well I heard it was the guys first time out on his new $60K boat, 1988 $, and he only manage to go six miles before he crashed it. It sunk before it made the 2-mile trip to the coast guard station!
