Alot of the checkmate owners over there have came to this board. I go to both. Can't help it.
Yes I have a problem. I wonder if AA has a help group for fourm addition. I did a search and they don't. So I guess I'll have to stay and get the help here. http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

I bought a used (like new) '00 Pulse 170 w/ Merc 150 XR6 back in November '02. Haven't had it out yet with the exception of the test ride which was all I needed to be convinced this was the boat for me.

Welcome anyway Barefoot Bob! I had a '92 Pulse 171 with XR6. I loved that boat. It's my second favorite Checkmate after the Pulsare........
I had real good luck with a 26" Laser II on mine. Does it have a jack plate? I'd recommend a 10" setback adjustable plate if you're looking to get real fast in that hull...And since it's such a short hull it gets to be a fun handful at speed http://www.checkmate-boats.com/6/ws/,s,8626072361/Graemlins/thumb.gif
At around 62 mph is pops out of the water onto the pad and HANG ON! Make sure your steering cables are nice and tight

LOL? Did you have some fun with the boat? I still like the Pulsare, then some older 'Streams..

JW,
No jack plate yet. I appreciate your expertise and advice as I am a novice (1st boat) regarding aftermarket enhancements. That said, are all jack plates manual or are there mechanical (hydrolic ?) jack plates also available ? If so, what might be the additional cost, benefits ? Where would you suggest I look to purchase a jack plate and Laser II prop ? Lastly, would a jack plate invalidate my hull warranty or violate boat insurance requirements ? Thanks for any/all insights.
Bob
P.S. I will change my alias once I know how to avoid any confusion with the Barefoot Bob on the other thread.
Jack plates can be manual or electric/hydraulic. I prefer the CMC manual 5.5" for a good solid cheap unit ($196 at BassPro.com). I'm not up on the hydraulic models/brands, but I do know that many new Checkmate Pulsare's are rigged with the CMC hydraulic at around $700. Same basic jack plate, just has a hydraulic motor to move the jack instead of the manual mechanism. You can check them out at: www.cook-mfg.com (http://www.cook-mfg.com) BassPro.com has the best prices on this brand of jack plate. I've always been too cheap to go hydraulic, and the Checkmate hull doesn't benefit from the advantages of power lift like a lightweight tunnel anyway. Best setback for a Pulse 170/171 with only 150 hp appears to be about 10"-14" back. The object of a jack plate is to allow the engine weight to carry the bow, instead of large positive trim on the engine.
As far as warranty goes, don't worry about it. My Pulse 171 did say the 5 year warranty was voided so I waited until it was over, but I'm not sure the warranty extends to a second owner anyway so you're probably in the clear.
Make sure you grab the back on the engine and wiggle it side to side and watch your steering arms on the left. If there's any play at all, then adjust the nuts on the forward steering cable in such a way that you move the cable to the left side of the boat, against the aft cable until both are tight against each other. This is the #1 thing to check to help reduce chine walking.
As far as chine walking goes, your boat will do it for sure, especially as you go above 55. Keep the tank full of gas and slowly drive up to speed where it 'walks' until you learn to drive through it. Takes a lot of hours to learn the technique. You basically swing the wheel against the hull's movement. Once you get used to it, then try it when almost out of gas and alone http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif The boat gets REALLY light and entertaining! As far as Laser II props go, get a new one from someone around you that will sell it for the best price. I got lucky and bought a prop from a guy that bought one, drove it once, and sold it to me for half price.
The benefit I found from a jack plate and the Laser II prop was higher top speeds and better handling. The jack plate also allowed my Pulse to launch flatter. At take-off, with the prop further back from under the hull, the prop has less leverage to lift the bow up sky-high. At high speeds with the engine back further, the weight of the engine has a positive affect on carrying the bow. Someone posted here earlier on another thread that a jack plate causes the bow to rise higher on launch, but they are misinformed. No substitute for experience http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

JW,
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I plan to follow your suggestions for jack plate and prop. Spring is still too far away !

JW,What pitch is tha laser 2 prop you have for sale?
BarefootBob. Look under the dealer links. There is a link there for rickracer.com He sells jackplate and HP stuff for outboards, If a CMC plate is what you have to have go to Basspro.com. But if another manufacture catches you eye, well rick at rickraces has the best price. Great helpfull folks over there.
Also in addition to the jackplate and prop, make sure you have a water pressure gauge. This is a must when yoou start to rasie the engine up.

Shame on me for forgetting! Thanks 175. Yes, Rickracer.com is a great place to get the loweset prices on engine and related parts. He sells the CMC and the Detwiler plates. He does have the best price I've found so far on the Detwiler jack plates, and they are considered one of the VERY best plate. I haven't thought of it before, but I'm going to check his price on an ET prop......
Also, my Laser II that I have for sale is a 23", too small for an XR6/Pulse 170 unless you want to just ski or lake race on small lakes. I'm keeping it around as a spare prop, and I also have a couple friends on my lake with I/O's that it works good on and both of them want to buy it. I like the 25" the best for Barefoot Bob's combo. The 25" will be a large hub, and the 26" will be a small hub. The small hub allows some extra slip around the prop hub for faster rpm spin-up, but may allow too much for a Checkmate style/weight hull. I ran the small hub 26" because I had the original XR6 gear case that was smaller diameter. I'm pretty sure the late '90's and up motors use the larger 'standard' diameter case, so they use the odd number pitched props.
Hey Bob, what state are you in?

I am running the large hub 25p laser 2. I have tried the small hub 26 laser and noticed to differance, but I think my 25 has been worked, so I am not real sure of the pitch.

How would something like a ET work? What do you usually use the boat for even though it's a fairly good all around prop?

The other bare foot Bob runs 19 foot Baja with a 225 Pro-Max and is from New Ulm Mn. He E- mailed me because we live only 40 miles apart ( I have never met him) and we are going to run each other this summer,( think I have him by about 7 or 8 Mph). I have a pulse 185 and I run a Lightning ET but to get a benifit from the props capabilities on a Checkmate, there needs to be alot of set-back because it doesn't Have as much bow lift as the laser or tempest and it definately needs to be run high because it's a surfacing prop- which means low water pick-up mod and with 10 inches or more of set back you will also need new steering cables and water pressure gauges and possibly water temp gauges and perhaps solid motor mounts. Speed sure can be expensive!!! So If you are willing to do all these things Try a Lightning ET.
If your pulse 170 is a bow rider , get a cover for the bow - It was good for a 3 mph gain- It was my cheapest Performance enhancement!!!
Good luck,. By the way I run a pulse 185 bow rider with a Lightning et 25in. With a 280 merc Efi Hydrolic cmc jack plate and 11 inches of set back and the prop 1/2 below the pad.
Good luck C-mate 280
