trailer tie down question

besides the winch, what do you use to secure the bow to the trailer ?

how about the stern ?

I have seen people strap from the bow eye down to trailer frame. As for the Stern, I use straps from the eyes to the trailer.

i've seen a lot of cheesy set ups - i use 2" wide straps with carpet to protect the hull from scratches - ideally one strap per transom eye with an extra up front for a longer trip.

if you have some u-bolts on your transom, use them to secure the stern of your boat to the trailer. especially if you are traveling on the interstate or a road with higher speeds. when it comes to an accident, moreso with the lighter boats we generally have, i have seen boats flip over on top of the car that is towing them.

plus it keeps the stern planted on the trailer over large bumps.

I CHEAPED OUT ON MY STERN STRAPS AND CUT DOWN SOME RATCHET STRAPS THEY DON'T TOUCH MT BOOAT SO NO WORRIES OF THEM SCRATCHING:p

I use an adjustable tie down from my bike trailer for the bow eye and regular transom tie downs in back. Most of the catalogs have a Trailer Strap Tune-Up package that includes everything you need for about $ 25.

I had the winch go on me the other day and the safety chain worked but I was wondering if the winch is supposed to be used to hold the boat on trailer. In other words, on your set-ups even though you're using additional securement means the winch is still the one under the most tension ?

we started useing a chain to keep the boat from going foward on the trailer when one came thru the back window

never used anything but the winch to keep it from sliding back

I use ratchet straps on both sides of the back and one in the front.

I love the "Boat Buckles" They are soooo quick and easy, I just got a third for the bow hold down.
I us the winch to hold the boat forward and if your winch strap (Thats all I use is flat strap, hate rope or cable) goes under the the front roller or V block and holds the boat down tight your all set, My Starflight likes to bob up and down on bumps so I also use a strap pulling down on the bow eye. You should allways have a safety chain from your winch stand to the bow eye so the boat cant get away in the event of an accedent, the chain dosent need to be tight just there and of adequit size, I use an extra trailer safety chain.

I haven't used or known anyone to use buckles but I use the cranking straps from the U-bolts on the stern to the trailer, as does everyone else I know. I should probably get one for the bow, too. Half the reason for my stern straps is in case some drunk decides to run a red and clip my trailer the boat doesn't hop off. That happened to my friend a few years ago when I was riding shotgun in his truck, 1998 25' baja outlaw totaled from dragging on the street beside the trailer, scary ride. Of course the drunk had NO insurance and tried to drive away.
