Hey everyone, I have a 2002 Checkmate Pulsare 2100 with a Mercury Optimax 250xs. It has a torquemaster gearcase with a 1.75:1 gear ratio and a lab finished Lightning ET 28 pitch prop. I want to know what prop would be perfect for all-around performance. I want to be able to pull a skier pretty easily and still be able to perform maxium speed. Right now I know it would be impossible to pull up a skier on one ski. Today I had 5 people in the boat and it didnt want to plane out too easily. So please respond if you have a prop to recommend for all-around performance. The Lightning ET works great midrange and top speed is great, but planing is a problem, please help, thanks

JW is running a 23 tempest, he has had it worked a bit. How many rpm can you the 28P?
And what speed are you running. Whats the set up?

Whats max RPM for the 250X? That seems a bit low to me.

You'd probably like the Tempest Plus best for all-around use. Try to find a 25" and try it, might be a great pitch to use. Sure wish you had a 24" ET, I'd love to borrow one.... http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif

Hello

I am running a 25p tempest on my spectra with 225 3.0 efi and a friend of mine runs a 27p tempest on a pulsare with 225 Yamaha. Both have no problems getting up with 5 people and can pull a 200 pound skier. The tempest is a great all round prop but requires a torque to work well

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY A TORQUE? WHAT IS THE DISTANCE BETWEEN THE PROP SHAFT AND BOTTOM OF BOAT ON YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS RIGS. IS THE PROP SHAFT HIGHER THAN THE BOTTOM? WHAT BOAT DO YOU HAVE, WHAT IS THE SPEED, IS THERE SETBACK?

what top speed does your friend with the 225 Yamaha and 27" Tempest get? Is he running the stock 5.5" setback jackplate? What is his engine height, prop shaft to bottom of the boat?

My buddy who used to have the Pulsare with the 225 OptiMax had a 27' Tempest if I was not mistaken and he got 77.6 MPH all the time. The XS is a different case though...

The guy with the Yamaha is different from the guy with the OptiMax. I was just putting him in there.. . If you'd like, I'd e-mail him and ask what props he tried and how they all reacted...

I e-mailed him. He'll probably reply later tonight. I'll keep you informed. This guy knows how to set up the boat. He knows how to set up most boats so you'll get what you want. Right now with his Hydrostream Venus with 225 ProMax, he can still do 95 MPH, pull kneeboarders, skiiers (1 and 2 skis) wakeboarders, tubers, etc... anything you want. His Pulsare did 77.6 and still did everything like that with the Opti...

I pulled my 23" Tempest off this week and tried a friends 24" Trophy. I lost hole-shot and top end. Put the 23" Tempest back on. Best prop so far........

Hey Corvette, if you have this friends email address, it would be easier if we talked back and forth so you wouldnt have to be the "middle man". Sound like a plan?

First of all, I'll see what he says about the last e-mail. He has not replied in a while. He has been busy working on a building in town. I'll taslk to him this weekend and see what he says. I'll give you his e-mail later... He does know his stuff on the Pulsare...

Pulsareproud, here is what he said. The 1st part was probably my mistake in the 1st e-mail.

I thought they only made a 200xs? I know the have a consumer 250 xb anyway what is the W.O.T of this motor? I found my pulsar ran best propshaft about an 1" believe the pad 10" setback and it could have used more likely 15" to be able to run without positive trim. I don't think the et is the best prop for him because they are designed for light weight hulls although I never tried one on mine. The best prop for all around performance I found was the 27p Merc tempest which I still have.

Many thanks for your reply, the 250xs is new for 2003 through high performance dealers only. Maxiumum rmps is about 5800-5900. Mercury intended for it to run 6300 but cut the rev-limiter back and put a 2 year warranty on it. I will take your advice and try the 27" Tempest this week. What of the three vent hole sizes did you run? The prop comes standard with the medium vent, it has a smaller and a larger available. Did you experiment with these? I'm running a stock 5.5" setback manual jackplate. Not sure where to run prop shaft to pad, any ideas? I do have a pressure gauge, and at wide open throttle Mercury recommends a minimum of 15 pounds.

Not sure where to start, but I'll bet it will be a good time.
Good luck in testing, be sure to give us numbers.
