I have some light oxidation on the top surface of my red checkmate. I was told that the only way to really get rid of chalky look was to re-shoot a clear coat. That would be a winter time project, soooo what to do for now? I have played with some rubbing compound and it seems to take the chalk off. I've also heard of using 303 aerospace products? just looking for some real life testimonials. It's a 91 boat that I bought in 2001 so I don't think it always sat in a garage like it does now. When I bought it, it gleemed but I think/ know that the guy who owned it had sprayed a product similar to the 303 stuff on it to give it temporary shine for sale.

i used maguires oxidation remover with a 2000 rpm grinder buffer with a terry cloth pad to bring out my brown metal flake and gel coat. mine was about as sun baked as they get and it came out brilliant. i also used maguires boat polish and uv wax after i was done.

I think 3M marine products are the best. Finess-it II to get out the oxidation. Use their Cleaner Wax if it is real bad, and then the Finess-it II. Follow up with their protective liquid wax. It's best to use stuff designed for fiberglass gelcoat rather than for auto paint, and these products are. Get from Walmart, your local marine store, or Overton's.
I wouldn't just clear over oxidized gel. You still need to remove the oxidation before you clear it, I think it will look better. If you use the 3m line of products and work your way down to a finer abrasive with each application and than a final coat of polish or protective wax, it will stay nice for long time. Compounds are abrasives and leave scrathes. The key is to get it down to a smooth scrath-free surface so the sun and water don't chalk it again. If polishing still doesn't get it, you'll have to wetsand and then polish.

Thanks for info. I am getting it to come up real nice. I will take some pictures soon. http://checkmate-boats.com/graemlins/sssh.gif I need to pour a concrete floor in my barn so the boat doesn't get so dusty. I am constantly washing it when ever it comes out of the barn. i should be pouring by this fall. It's a time issue and I need to buy some channel iron for the sliding doors so they can slide nicely in a bottom track.

I recently tried a new product called vertglas, gel coat retoratorer on my dads 1960 lonestar flamingo, the results were amazing. it uses a three part system, a oxidation remover, a boat wash and fianaly, a sealer that bring the finish back to a show room shine, it is somewhat labor intensive, the sealer takes 6-8 coats. My dads boat was chalky and dull, the boat had been stored outside for more than 10 years much of it without a cover, and this verglas brought it back. I had never seen that old boat looke thet good. I'm not sure how well the finish holds up I only recently applied it to his boat. The other downside is that vertglas is expensive $65.00. you can find it a overtons and some other online places.
Hope this helps.
