I will be looking around Thanksgiving time for a newer Merc Outboard. Is the Optimax motor worth the extra bucks over a std Merc EFI motor?
Is a 3.0 liter better than a 2.5 liter?
Any ideas on where to buy ie dollars for Horsepower?

Well, that depends. The optimax is cheaper to operate, but history shows it breaks more than the regular efi motors. The 3.0 is better than the 2.5 for heavy boats like yours, but then again the 2.5 has been around a LOT longer and has more hop-up capabilities.
Checkmates owned: 1995 Pulsare 2100BR/1995 Mercury Promax 225 2.5 EFI. 1995 Persuader 183/4.3 LX V6. 1992 Pulse 171/1992 Mercury XR6 150 hp 2.5 liter.
May be a little much but the 225 ProMax seems to have great reliability. The one the guy with the 'Stream has has around 160 hours and he's used it for everything, skiing the kids, skiing himself, tubing, midnight put-put rides, 95-96 MPH runs, you name it, it can do! http://www.checkmate-boats.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif
It may cost you enough at the start, but you'll thank yourself when say the Opti blows up later...
