I'd invite everyone to Glen Lake but the water level is so low , I have to push my Senator out the channel by hand . Might be the end of boating on this lake till the DNR can figure out how to dredge the channel without getting their excavator stuck like last year .

Well I've had it out 3 times now - all with the family. 3yr old, 6month old and my wonderful "human carseat" wife who for some crazy reason puts up with me. The wind whips the little guy around pretty bad at anything over 40 but he likes it. I finally remembered the GPS and did a WOT from 30, for what only felt like a second and got to 51.2 before I kinew it and pulled back. The spedo was only a couple of mph high at that speed. I've always thought they were further off than that. It actually gets closer to GPS speed above 40mph. I bet that 63 I saw with Curt on the test drive was a good 60 GPS.

I don't think you can beat a nice old CM on the fun per $ meter!

Anyhow, my old boss (black '87 CM BR I/O) and I are scheduled to go to his brother's place on Belleville lake Next wednesday (9/26). His brother has 2 modified pickleforks (100 and 126ph!!) and about 5 props for my boat to play with (25P cleaver!). So if anyone is around that day, look for us and stop by. Just west of the DNR site on the south shore. Date could change though. Feel free to PM me a few days before.

Hey a get together would be great. Should pick a lake up north or privat that is not crawling with sheriffs like they are in Oakland county, that way we can run wide open without a hassel (NOt that we do that already, but just in case we would like to).

This season is over however for me, my the boat is moth-balled already since the start of large critter hunting.

Hi There!
I'm a 3 year owner of a 1989 Vison 220 which I love. Anyway I'm looking to have some maitenance performed but don't know of any reputable mechanics in the area.

I'm willing to travel anywhere in SW Michigan. My boat has a 454 w/ a Bravo 1 drive. Hope to get some work done before the summer.

Any sugesstions would be great.

Thanks!

Welcome Sixdonuts,

Not sure if you are willing to drive to SE Michigan, but I have had great luck at our local marine in Southeast Michigan minutes from Brooklyn.

Devils lake Watersports - Alan is their top (mercruiser) mechanic and has a very good reputation. This marine is family owned and has been growing steadly in business because of their great customer service.

Only place I know of around here that really knows CMate I/O's quite well is Premier at Gun Lake. They've put a lot of big I/O boats up on Gun.

If we do a South West Michigan get-together, I'd want to go to Gull Lake. It's huge, has a great sand bar, and has a gas dock at the south end. Only problem with Gull is the 45 mph speed limit :sssh:

i'm good w/ that , my wife dont like long runs of speed anyway just short bursts ,but heres to sandbars !:cheers

I grew up in Portage, next time you're in town let me know supergenius74!

Im back to the board again, havent been on here for a while sold my checkmate last summer.....BUT I just bought another Mate. I just bought a 1986 Checkmate 18' open bow. Not sure what model yet. Its got the 86 115hp motor which Im going to be looking for a newer 135 - 175hp. I do most of my summer on the HardyDam Muskegon river, With a few trips to Torch Lake . Would love to try some new places this summer. Just wanted to say hello to the Michigan Boaters. Troy aka persuader22:bigthumb::cheers

I just have to upload the photos to photobucket later on, I looked under the 1986 brochure to try to see what model? you will have to let me know what model you think it is by the pics. What year is the motor you have?

JW

Take a tape measure and get the actual distance from the nose to the transom, that'll help determine what model you have

New to forum and checkmates. But, just got the first one about 3 weeks ago! live near gull lake and will be out this summer. FYI the speed limit is 40....what a waste! and it has a db rating of 90! Also no campgrounds on the lake. there are a couple not far though! :bigthumb:

JW
03-21-2008, 06:31 PM
That darn speed limit :rof:

I topped that with my first Pulse years ago when I had a day off with the family. Great lake to get a Checkmate up on plane, balanced on the pad, and run 60+ for the length from top to bottom.

Put the 7 1/2 on the back of the Alumacraft and shoved it into the water. I got about a football field size opening. Drove back and forth several times :bigthumb:

OOPS! I just saw a dock floating by. I guess I stirred up the water enough to break apart my neighbors dock (that he shouldn't have left in all winter). I'll put on the waders and go down and rescue it...........:o

Anybody here ever go to Lake James? It's just over the border in Angola, Indiana. I was up at the yacht club last week and people were still ice fishing! C'mon spring!

I do! what a party, probably the best place to boat in northern indiana except that it gets really busy sometimes. I say we have a get together on gun lake, I liked gull lake but the public access kinda sucked I thought and you obviously can't go fast. Gun lake is a little farther north but huge and although it is shallow you can go fast and there is a big island that everyone parties at. Just my thoughts, i will go anywhere withing driving distance for a descent checkmate rally.

I took our " work" snowmobile out on the lake today and pulled in all of our signs that we have on the snowmobile trail on the lake. Right now the ice is almost 3' thick.

Our fishing opener is just over 30 days away. Still close to 11" of snow on the ground. Mother Nature has a lot of work to do. That's pretty much all I can say as last night our low temp was 7 degrees. Last year it was 81 degrees on March 26th and we had "Ice-Out" on April 2nd.

I think we were spoiled.... Michigan seems like Florida to me!

It must be tuff to see spring around the corner, but it just wont get here.:brickwall:You guys are strong, because I dont think I could take 5 months off the water. Is this winter dragging on or is this the norm?Well anyway heres to a quick warm up and may your lakes thaw fast.:cheers

Should hit 60-65 this weekend in SE WI. I'd take the boat out of storage this weekend to get it ready (or just sit in it and make engine noises) but my boss is sending me to Toronto for a week of training. I'm leaving 65 for Canada! Aaahhh!! No offense meant!!!!
